My first time growing
    #394833 -

Hey all, I am getting ready to cultivate some mushrooms for the first time in my life... Right now I am very preliminary, I have read the MMGG a number of times, and have been browsing around here quite a bit... but suffice to say I just have a few nervous newbie questions. Basically I see alot of stuff mentioned here that I am not so clear on so I will just ask away. First off, what is perilite I hear so much about? How is it used? Next, I am curious if someone could explain how exactly you make a casing. The other thing I am still a bit unclear on is where I could purchase an ultrasonic humidifier. What sort of stores might have them... Hopefully with all that answered I can build my terrarium, and get started.

Thanks in advance guys.

You will not need a ultrasonic humidifier as perlite is used as a humidifier. Perlite is a materal found at most local gardening stores which you add a layer to the bottom of your fruiting chamber and add some water and it will bring up the humidity in your chamber. Cakes as well as casing need high levels of humidity to initilize pinning of mushrooms. Casing are made by using a bottom layer of, lets say, damp vermiculite, a middle layer of fully colonized PF style cake or other spawn substrate, and a top layer of damp vermiculite. Other materials like peat moss or oyster shells can be used for different reasons. The casing is then allowed to have mycellium spead and rise to the top and then fruiting will begin. Hopefully I have cleared up a couple of your questions.
