Alternatives to Vermiculite?
#693812 - 06/22/02 08:15 AM (22 years, 7 months ago) |

I have everything to grow except for vermiculite, ive tried small hardware shops, small nurserys, and big nurserys (home depot, walmart, k-mart, etc). NONE of these people have vermiclite, and they all told me the same thing, they dont sell it because it can cause cancer. Are there any alternatives to vermiculite for a substrate, or do i have to find some other way? please any help would be appreciated! tps-

from the FAQ ( www.shroomery.org/faq )
Some 10 years ago vermiculite originating from one mine in the United States was found to contain certain levels of asbestos and the mine was shut down. The vermiculite sold today shouldn ?t contain asbestos and should be available readily. Nevertheless, it?s a good idea not to breath any dust that emerges from handling vermiculite. Once vermiculite is wet, there is no more danger from airborne particles. Please read the following links for more information:
http://wdhfs.state.wy.us/ahrp/vermiculite.htm http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/verm.html
Best places to look for are garden centers, pet shops and hydrophonics shops. Vermiculite is also available online from many places.

Better re-read that post:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum4&Number=690221&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
He said he used half verm. and half perl. in the SAME jars. Not all perlite. That probably won't work.
There are vendors all over the web that will sell you vermiculite.
Here's one:
http://www.drbluethumbs.com/supplies.html
and here's another alternative: (bottom of the page)
http://www.thesporehaven.com/search.html
More expensive, yes, but for a beginner all the guess work is taken out. Triples your chances for success. For example, you're already cutting out the pressure cooker, and you've never even done this before. I hate to play devil's advocate here, but very few first time growers succeed on their first attempt. I'd love to see you grow 'em first try, but it's tougher than it seems. Don't modify a proven tek to save time or expense (especially on your first 3 attempts). Do it by the book!
I suppose since you've already got the jars and BRF, you'll still wan't to try mixing the formula and creating the substrate yourself. Just don't get your hopes up too high or you'll really be let down big if it fails.
Think about it, if it were really easy to grow shrooms;
(1) The Shroomery wouldn't have this forum or the advanced one.
(2) Everyone and their mother would be looking to get rid of their surplus supply of dried shrooms in the freezer.
(3) You'd be hearing about the latest big cubensis bust on the news.
Sorry, didn't mean to rain on your parade, just want you to realize what you may be in for, so it's not too disapointing when it happens.
No matter what... DON'T GIVE UP! Learn from your mistakes, and benefit by them. YOU WILL EVENTUALLY SUCCEED!!

yeah, i saw that also bout the half half thing... unfortuantly, i know its not going to come out that well, if at all, but i had some free time so i said 'might as well give it a shot'. Ive grow marijuana outdoors a couple of times, but i wanted to try out new things. learning is good preciate the criticism, and information. tps-

think i may order everything from dr blue thumbs, i can return the brown rice flour that i bought today, and just order the pre sterilized stuff, its only $2 for a half pint jar of both (i believe), and their syringes are $6... so it would be cheap, and fun to do thanks for the info m8!

I would get at least 4 jars. It's normal io have a 25-50% failure rate on PF Tek Cakes even if you're experienced.

Yeah i just picked some up at LOWE's yesterday.
That's total bullshit cigarettes causes cancer but i don't see anyone in a hurry to stop selling those in fact because it causes cancer they'll just tax the shit out of it and make more money.
I'm gonna have to stock up now.
OH rye grain or birdseed (not as forgiving though)
