i've been using jiffy mix as casing but it's hard to keep it contaminant free. how does vermiculite compare to peatmoss (and other organic products ie coco coir) as a casing material?

saws head open, dumps spoonfuls of information into head. seals head.
it's almost like doing a g2g transfer with spawnbags.

if you're having trouble with contams, plain verm is probably your best bet. it's doesn't suck, i've used it by itself before and never had any problems. you probably want to get the fine verm for casings rather than the coarse stuff (which is better for pf style jars).

i have seen verm used as casing layer on various internet guides. i have never tried i though. i use peat mixed with vermiculite (10 parts peat, 5pts verm, 2pts limestone) and i don't have any problems with contams. do you sterelize your casing?

im using streight verm right now and it seems to stand up to contams nicely. but it doesent look like its gonna be 1 bit of an improvement over cakes when it comes to pinning.
but hey if ure having problems with the jiffy maybe theres something off in your sterility procedures.

Garden stores will have peat, mix some verm and limestone through it and you are good to go. Dont forget to PC or MW it if you have so much contaminants around.
Actually unlike evilchipmunk say, fine verm is better as a anti-contam layer in the PF jars. In the substrate a little coarse is better. Also for casings I think more coarse is better.
Plain verm will work as a casing layer but is the worst option available, also because the microclimate (and-structure) of verm sucks. Hyphae knows how to explain this, but believe me!

Do you get flushes like this with strait verm?
I dont. If you do, then I guess straight verm doesnt suck. Until I see it though. I stick with my opinion. Straight verm sucks.
Why? Because I tried it, and it does. If you want a real in depth explination, read up on this often talked about and tired topic by searching...
Some of us get tired of explaining things over and over again.

You know what buddy. Your a shit head. Derx is an asset to this community and you give him a 1 shroom. Thats so fucking lame. Just because you post on this lame stupid assed topic that gets asked EVERY DAMN DAY, because your to lazy to search. No one said shit to you. Everyone just left the post to let you figure out some things yourself, instead of being an asshole and yelling at you FOR NOT FOLLOWING FORUM RULES and performing a search first. Do you think that post that says "PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING ANY QUESTIONS" is there just for fun? Its there so we dont have to sit here and waste or time on such posts.
NO ONE wanted to deal with this post, including myself because I can be an asshole to people who dont feel like actually doing any work or research themselves. It was dropping down the page though, and instead of letting you go ahead and use verm and relize you made a mistake doing so, I posted to let you know that it sucks and not to use it. And you come back and then ask me to do what I tried to avoid, explaining.
Go learn something for yourself if you ever want to be successful in this hobby and dont be such an asshole to someone just because you acted like an idiot and they called you on it.
Everytime I try to be nice to people, people go off being dicks. You wonder why your experience with people here is seeing them as assholes? Because you bring out the asshole side in people.
