Are straw and Hay the same thing?

I have been growing using PF/mmgg for 2 years and at this time I am looking at a bulk growing Tek. One of the ones I am considering calls for either wheat straw or barley straw. I am by no means a farmer, so are hay and straw the same thing? I don't imagine they are, so where would I buy them in Ontario, Canada.A friend of mine says he can get all the hay I want. Any and all sugestions or advice are very welcome.

straw is the stalk of a grain or grass. hay is generally alfalfa, a clover-like plant, but in all cases is a crop cut and dried green in an attempt to preserve protien content for animals, where straw has considerably less food value for animals.

there are posts on this board that indicate that hay can be used with success, so can cut stalks of tall grasses. both need to be pasturized in some fashion. hay may need to be sterilized.
