another question about straw and poo!!!!
    #2307065 - 02/06/04 12:06 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

so, is any kind of straw suitable?  i have a place that sells alfalfa straw for 2$ a bail, so i was thinking about picking some of that up, if it's okay that is.  also poo...i know that you're supposed to use the fecal matter of a ruminate, but is chicken poo okay?  or should i just stick to cow dung?

thanks in advance

is there a reason why horse poo is better than cow poo? does a cow digest the material more than a horse?

They're both good.  Use whatever you can get easily.

Skip the chicken shit, though! :noway: And I'm not too sure about alfalfa.  Seem to recall hearing some warnings against it.

yeah, i wasn't too sure about the chicken shit...the only reason i asked is cuz they sell it for about 5$ for 20 pounds. i thought that it was pretty cheap, and if it worked! hey it's cheap. i thought the only concern with alfalfa is if it's alfalfa hay. as hey hasn't yet released it's seed it's got a bunch of those endospores on it. but i wouldn't think that alfalfa STRAW would have that same concern...maybe there's another reason not to use it? like lacks nutrition or something? but if i were casing with poo, i don't think that that would matter.

I'm pretty sure you need to stick to equine poo horse works better I suspect becuase horses generally eat more grain than cows but not real sure, just know what worked better on this end of the rainbow.

for $5 it'd sure be worth a try, whats the worse that could happen? you lose some time a few spores and learn something one way or the other. sounds like an interesting experiment to me.

imagine what a horse gets feed, the best of the best. a horse is someones pet and a cow is a money machine (sad really). a corporate cow eats what is the cheapest. assuming you get out what you put in horse poo would be ideal, but it doesn't really matter. it usually will be decided by what is available.

As far as I know is chicken poo and alfalfa hey far too hot (= too much nitrate ). I guess you should mix both of them it with normal straw. Maybe someone of the pros could be more precise on this ?

wheat straw is best and rye straw is also good. oat and barley straw will also work. alfalfa usually means hay. are you sure it isn't hay?

you can add a little bit of chicken shit but it shouldn't be the main poo constituent. i wouldn't mess with chicken shit.

get wheat straw and horse or cow manure.
