do i have straw or hay?

I went to my local pet store today and i found this sitting on the shelf...


i was wondering if anyone could tell me whether it is straw or hay. the packaging says "Oat, Wheat, & Barley double compressed bale for small animals". Its made by Alfalfa King and i am inclinded to think that it is hay becuase it is used as a feed, but id like a second opinion...

regardless of what it is has anybody used this?

Well, I would suppose it is a mix, but more of it being hay. Straw is the stalks from wheat. But hay is cuttings from grass's or herbs(such as alfalfa, barley, hops,etc) and dried to be used as fodder.
The reason I say it may be a mix, is because I'm pretty sure they didn't take the time to seperate the stalks out of the wheat.

I'll look for that, though, next time I'm at the pet store, and get some for my guinea pig!

Have you tried Timothy Hay?

thanks for the reply... seems logical that it could be a mix... if it werent for its golden color and its resemblence to straw i wouldnt be so confused. Well what they heck ill give it a shot anyways and see how it turns out...

here is what the material looks like...



the camera and lighting has made it all look a bit greener than it really is (at least on my computer) but its still provides u with an accurate idea of what it looks like

its an even mix of lt. greenish and golden straw-like stem thingies...

it should not look green, just yellow. I think wal-mart has some, or check nursery's. You want yellow stalks. If that looks yellow, it might be worth it. Don't invest all your spawn though.

yeah. if in doubt, you probably are just better getting something else. no sense wasting so much effort when it's so easy to get some real deal straw.

Halloween is around the corner, just walk/drive around town there should be a few people with straw in there yards for decoration, just borrow some, when you get your first flush leave that person a treat in there mail box  :grin:
