Reclaiming ethanol for re-use

Currently I use 95% Grain Alcohol to run extractions. Lately I've been worried about the "waste" of alcohol in the proccess. Considering that I use grain alcohol for all my extractions, the money is adding up fast. I have been thinking of ways to reclaim the ethanol and came up with an idea last night.

Ethanol that has been standing with the desired herb for 3-14 days is poured into the "boiling flask" in the above picture. Then some of the chopped/dry herbal material is added to the "boiling flask" so that the final product absorbs into the small amt of plant material instead of turning into resinous goo that sticks to the side of the flask. Ethanol is then heated to boil off and UP into the "condenser coil" so that it then drips into the collecting flask.

I have a concern as to whether the ethanol would still contain actives from the plant but I don't see how it could if it was turned into a vapor first.

Anyways I'm looking for comments/suggestions or advice from others who make herbal extractions.

I'm not sure I quite understand...
You do an alcohol extraction, and, then, distill this.
The distillate contains alcohol with the essential oil, which has been carried over.
What are you "reclaiming?"

In my experience I simply let all the alcohol evaporate on a small quantity of the original herb to make a desired extract. I know of essential oils but I believe that applies to steam distillation. In the first scenario i'm letting the alcohol evaporate, but instead of evaporating "into the air" I'd like it to evaporate then recondense into a form; thus reuse.

It would work i guess.

You may have plant volatile oils come along with the EtOH, but they shouldn't cause problems in future extractions.

Depending on the active you're extracting you may also have some actives distilled off along with the alcohol. Thujone for example will be present in absinthe even after it is heat distilled. Asarone is another active substance that can be distilled.

Esin does that mean those chemicals are distilled at the same heat ethanol boils at?

Look into azeotropes.
Also, solubility does play a factor in what comes over occasionally.

So how can we find out what can and cant be carried over in alcohol vapors?? Can THC? How about DMT?? Or has this been thought up and discarded years ago?

I find it strange that thugone will remain inthe vapror.

rah I only wish I could say the same. Hearing that reminded me of smoking wormwood extract. Would clog every single peice :what:

eventually, albeit innacurately, vaporized for a very naseaus feeling. I have a feeling I would have been better off drinkin the alchy. live and learn :thumbup:
