Alcohol Extraction Questions
    #2411778 - 03/09/04 07:48 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Hello,

I have just put two ounces of wormwood into 750ml of everclear. I also have several other ethnos that I want to add into the mixture such as motherwort, wild dagga, sceletium, calea zacatichichi, and some "herb".

I am not sure how much by weight of material I have. The motherwort and wild dagga are each a 1/3 of a one gallon ziplock bag, the sceletium is about an 1/8 ounce, an 1/8 ounce of calea, and the "herb" is a 1/4 ounce.

-- Can alcohol only extract so much material before it hits its limit?

-- Will I have to add more alcohol?

-- Should I add the ethnos in stages, or all at once?

-- Once I have finished with the extraction can I slowly simmer off the alcohol in a crock pot until the alcohol is all gone?

-- Or, will I have to leave the alcohol to expect to get any of the ethnobotanical's effects?

I also know that alcohol won't extract all actives, some are water soluable.

--So should I add in say 250ml of water to help with the extraction?

I will shake the concoction every day to make sure every thing gets nice and mixed up. I will also grind most of the herbs to help make sure that they are all completly covered by the liquid.

Thanks for reading this and helping me out.

Peace

Edited to help clarify a couple things.

Are you making like a multi entheo hash extract or something? Why add all those herbs all at once if you're not leaving the alcohol for something like say absinthe.

>>-- Can alcohol only extract so much material before it hits its limit?

Yes.

>>-- Will I have to add more alcohol?

If it reaches saturation point and/or equilibrium then yes.

>>-- Should I add the ethnos in stages, or all at once?

Some people do it in stages some don't. I don' t think it matters really.

>>Once I have finished with the extraction can I slowly simmer off the alcohol in a crock pot until the alcohol is all gone?

You could do that.

-- Or, will I have to leave the alcohol to expect to get any of the ethnobotanical's effects?

No

>>--So should I add in say 250ml of water to help with the extraction?

Most things that are soluble in alcohol will be soluble in water for our purposes in extractions. But a alcohol water mix 75:25 respectively wouldn't be a bad idea to use for any alcohol extraction mix.

I'd put all my herbs to be used in the freezer then take them out, then put them back in and then powder them up to get them good and ready then i'd use them for the extraction.

Hello,

The only reason that I want to boil out the alcohol is to see if you can get any real effects just from the ethnobotanicals. I have made an extraction this way once before (minus most of the herbs), left in the booze, and I could not tell if I was getting effects from the mixture or just the alcohol.

How would I find out the saturation level?

Perhaps I will leave the booze in and just dilute it with water.

Thank you for answering my Q's.

Peace

>>How would I find out the saturation level?

It will be different for each compound.

Equilibrium point will be roughly the same though.

Hello,

I have finished my Absinthe mixture, I ended-up putting in all of the above mentioned herbs. I added 250 ml of water to the mixture. It sat for eight days in a warm location. Shook once a day.

I strained it through a fine mesh strainer and then through doubled up coffee filters.

The final color is really dark. I can not really see through it, even when held up to the sun.

I am not going to boil off the alcohol after all. I will be trying it tonight or tomorrow.

I will post back with any conclusions.

Peace

It does not smell nearly as bad as I thought that it would.

I will see tomorrow how bad the taste is.

Peace

Why are you wasting expensive alcohol? 90% isopropyl would work around just as well, its a great, clean, cheap solvent that is the perfect choice if your planning on making dry extracts.

Hello,

I tried my mixture.  It has quite the "unique" taste. :crazy2:

I used one shot glass worth with 5x that amount of water.

I disolved a sugar cube on a fork with the water.  The mixture turned a bit cloudy looking.

I took one drink at first and then just drank around half of it.  I then drank some regular water because this stuff is pretty bad tasting.  I then finished off the rest of the glass.

I repeated this method with a second glass, and then just waited.

After some time I started to notice that I was drifting off into weird little thoughts.  All quite random.  I was relaxed fealing.

The experience is warm, mellow really, and very bad tasting.

Peace
