Myc VS Mould
    #3671591 - 01/24/05 08:30 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Hey. I searched but couldn't find what I wanted in the posts ... (mycelium and mould are common words...)

I found a 70% colonised jar had a one rye kernel go green.

The mushroom myc has surrounded the mould, and is slowley covering it.

I understand it is not good to use this jar but..

What happens as I leave the mould & myc to fight?

Will one kill the other, or supress it? (or grow together?)

Will any mould toxins (if present) be absorbed into the mushroom myc?

Cheers

Ive heard of myc conqeuring the green mean mold. Mostly people will tell you to toss it.

If I were you, Id case it, and fruit it in a separate chamber/bucket. Im not that much of a tosser...

Dont know if the green monster is bad for your health... Probably nice additive to the trip..

Trichoderma mycelium is white, It would be hard for you to discern it from mushroom mycelium in a jar. But, if you have one kernel that is green then most of the white in your jar is probably from Trich. Throw it out.

not always true, Ive had mycelium colonized grain and straw as well. with only small pieces of green. Also green starts out small (and white  )

Ive been cutting out the contams with relative succes. Anyway not all the white you see is pers? "green" or "trichoderma".

So I guess that the mushroom & 'other' myc's will live together in the jar?

I am not gonna use the jar, was just wondering whats happening in there.

Darkfly:

I'm pretty sure the green (lets call it trich for simplicity) is seperate and tiny - the jar is the only contam out of 10 g2g transfers (rye).

The 'master' jar was not contam'd, the trich appeared in the 'last' uncolonised part of one jar - there was no visible myc present around the green grain, although the rest of the jar is full of healthy, rhizomorphs.

Wish I had a pic...

Mold wins, throw it out before you just end up sporolating up yer place infecting further grows.

Toss the shit first sign of mold. If you know what your looking for you can some times catch it before it even gets green and makes millions of spores.

Dont put in your main terrarium, you never know. But I would fruit it separate and not toss it. But thats just me! Lot of others will tell to toss.

Yahh, cant tell people enough -

Virgin myco freak 10 years ago, just moved into a new house.

Went from MMGG, and smelled for contams. Always washed and reused jars, until about 6-8 months went by.

Green contaminated EVERYTHING, even regular food. AFOAF couldnt get above 30% success even with a glovebox, upper and lower foil seal, with an injection port. This problem never went away until we moved, and AFOAF never bothers with the contams, isnt worth it.

His regular success rate is almost always, so the endless green spores ruining everything for great while to come isnt a tall tale, it does have some substance.
