Would a bicycle tire tube work as a replacment, any other ideas? It's a large Mirro pressure canner.

nooooooooooooo! try & contact mirro for a replacement part. you DONT wanna fuck with pressure cooker parts.

or, look in hardware stores that stock canning supplies; ACE hardware locally sells pressure canner/cooker replacement rings and other parts. presto pressure cooker/canner parts can be bought online...

i agree. if your gasket is flat like innertube rubber, it's still a special kind of rubber. on one of my bigger ones, the gasket sometimes needs to be run under hot hot hot water and given a little stretching, gently but firmly.

also check to see that the entire rim of the kettle is very smooth. sometimes it can be burnished smooth by firmly rubbing a piece of hard steel over the knicks to ewrase them. do not use anything that will change the gap distance, such as a file or sandpaper, since this may permamentlly render the kettle a mere soup pot.
