Verm. and asbestos
    #3906970 - 03/12/05 02:08 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I've been growing mushrooms since august now and have done a lot of reading on vermiculite. Mostly every website that I read about the safety of vermiculite say that there are trace amounts of asbestos in all vermiculite. Now seeing that I can never completely get every last flake of verm. off of the stems of my shrooms, I am ingesting small amounts every time I eat some. What is this going to end up doing to me down the road? I know that asbestos cause mesothelioma, but that is caused by inhalation of abestos. Anybody have any ideas?

NO type of verm sold today has asbestos. It hasnt been mined since 91 when the mine that had verm and asbestos in it was closed. Its safe to injest a few flakes. Still wear a dust mask when working with large amounts though, dust isnt good..

yep...I worked in the shipyards for years and had to deal with asbestos.
They used to use asbestos to wrap pipes for insulation.
You would pull down the insulation off the pipes and see these little particles floating down on your ass.

there was one vermiculite mine in Libby Montana that had asbestos...years ago.

the mines are now heavily watched and regulated by the EPA.

Page that will ease your mind

Verm doesn't have asbestos in it now days.
