Why Noone Can Find Verm
    #4465758 - 07/28/05 08:34 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I hope this isnt old news to everyone, but I keep seeing people asking why they cant find vermiculite.  I talked to my friend who is majoring in mycology (how sweet is that), he said that vermiculite is being taken of shelves across the country due to inhalation issues.  Some people claim it has similar properties to asbestos, thus, you often times can find nice fat saks of perlite, but no vermiculite.  All of these theories are wrong as vermiculite in its natural state contains no asbestos, never the less, according to some nice nursury employees that is why they are taking it out of some stores.  If im wrong, please respond with death theats and racial insults.  long live shroomery :mushroom2:

It's not being taken of the shelves.

No it doesn't cause any health problems.

Where's P1 with his information as usual?

I'll find a link.

And I'll pass on the childish insults...

Well the whole thing with that is some abestos was found in or near a vermiculite mine so all those rumors started up about the vermiculate contammed with asbestos, there is plenty of uncontammed verm of course. As for it being hard to find, i just dont think alot places see the need to carry it or it may just be easier to obtain perlite for sale

Why is it hard to find?

It's a seasonal product.

I know that Lowe's (or was it home depot) take it off the shelves during certain seasons.

Nursey's have it year round.

Me neither. lol

I'm sure that it's probably hard to find in some places.

Like everything else...lol

I think most people that say they can't find it - Don't really look.

They just post here hoping someone will say, Go..Here...lol

But that just doesn't exactly happen...

We just tell there what they already know and they get angry and yea...lol

Anyways...

Hey Dead...

Where is it that your friend is getting their information?....

Just curious....I see people post all the time about how it's this and that...But they never give ANY link...Just something like, "well my friend is majoring in mycology and THEY said"...

Just a thought.

Tell your friend that I said he rocks and Gl.

Verm - Sucks water in.

Perlite - Wicks it out.

So no.

It doesn't work the same.

All I said was that he told me PEOPLE WERE COMPLAINING about verm having similar properties to asbestos. Obviously thats true otherwise noone would have taken the time to write a report that said VERMICULITE IS NOT ASBESTOS

You should do your research. There was A SINGLE mine in the 80's which the verm contained asbestos. Since it was shut down, a lot of verm companies put on the bag that they are asbestos free, because a number of people like to go around spreading that it contains asbestos.

Nothing is safe to breathe in, youll find the same warnings for perlite, oyster shells, or any other material where powder sprays into the air when you pour it and it can be inhaled. Now please listen to everyone in the thread, and quit spreading this misinformation...it gets so tiring.

DID ANYONE READ THE TITLE OF THE THREAD. Im not claiming that verm has any bad properties. And I am well aware of the fact that a single mine in montana produced vermiculite containing tremolite actinolite. All I was offering was that some stores (at least by me) have been taking off the shelves for this reason, which is possibly one of the reasons (insert thread title here).
