Verm connect JUST STOPPED SELLING VERM... because it causes cancer?
    #3598328 - 01/08/05 12:29 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

FUCKING REDNECKS.  I used to go to Agway to get these gigantic (4ft tall, 2.5 ft wide) bags of vermiculite for 15 bucks.  It was something like 10cu ft.  I went there last week, and they stopped selling it cause "it causes cancer".  Isnt that rumor mad old?  ARGGG

old and false. The problem was that where they were mining for it they often found deposits of chrysotile (type of asbestos) so some workers were getting sick. As long as your not snorting the verm you'll be fine. The same thing happened by me, but I found a place that gets it in the suburbs.

you can tell them you want to order some and most places will, if they refuse
let them know that you have greenhouse horticultural projects that depend on
vermiculite and as a long standing customer you are willing to carry your
business elsewhere

you may want ot inform them that it is a rumor and that you always follow safety
precautions regardless because there is a lot of dust from it

Vermiculite has recently made the news as a potential health hazard. The vermiculite that has caused concern comes from a specific source, Libby, MT. The Libby vermiculite contains a high percentage of asbestos. That deposit stopped producing. But, store manager idiots don't know that.

yep! I work at an environmental lab analyzing samples for asbestos. Vermiculite is used in some construction so I see it all the time. I have never once found asbestos or any other particularly hazardous material in vermiculite.

I am sure it has more to do with the fact that it harbors home bacteria and molds... (We all know that mold grows freely on this stuff.) That in combination with the dust that it creates after YEARS of use, makes it harmfull. Nothing to do with asbestos.

Glass blown insulation is next to go, followed by normal glass insulation. (It is a hard battle... like trying to fight Phillip Morrisse! They are both "Trillion dollar industries")

Vermiculite harbors nothing because its a product made from mica, a mineral
or a rock if you will. its super heated and expands in the same way that
perlite is handled. there is no nutrition for the spores to feed from
and all it does is simply absorb and hold water, as for the dust, most
people dont use the same vermiculite for years, if they do its
in the form of a radio crystal and they arent breathing it

why do you suddenly remind me of Fast Fred?

Fast Fred
He came out of nowhere with the answers to everything huh?

Yeah, prisoner#1 is right.  Verm is non-nutritive and should be sterile straight from the bag due to the superheating while processing this stuff.  Nothing is going to grow freely on verm.

Well, I dont think those documents really say anything about verm not being asbestos, but thanks anyway. besides, i dont think these hicks have much reading ability either. I will just give them cancer with my mind. and try to find another.
