Knocked up
    #3885395 -

Today I knocked up 3 jars. 2 with cambodian and one golden teacher. This is my first attempt at growing, so I hope it goes well. I used the PF tek and kept everything as clean as possiable. My only consern is that we used pint jars instead of half pint? Has anyone ever used whole pint jars for cakes? I don't plan on birthing the cakes but casing them. Leave any feedback. Thanks.

Bigger jars are fine - if you look at this site, you'll see lots of half pint jar pics. However, larger jars can take longer to colonize. Be VERY careful about sanitation, though. With only 3 jars, any loss will feel major. Did you do that with 2 purchased syringes? Next time, sterilize a little jar full of distilled water with your cake jars. Let it cool, and shoot a syringe full of spores into the jar. If you're careful & alcohol wipe and/or flame the needle between insertions, you can use that diluted inoculum to knock up a lot more jars.

Saber.... Everything sounds good brother.... The only thing is, like my brother above me said, is that it will take a longer time to colonize, therefore give any contams that didnt get killed a better chance to take hold. I also believe that you should be cooking more jars than that, because you should factor in at least a 10% loss due to contams... Anyway, good luck bro... I hope all goes well.

Thanks for stopping by.

Mages : That sounds like a good idea. I did sterilize the needle between cakes.

Floydseamus : More are on the way. I figured I would try these 3 and see if they take hold and then cook up some more jars.

Oh, they are currently being housed in a home made incubator and are being misted with Lysol and water a few times a day.

I would really suggest getting some 1/2 pint jars if you are going to go the BRF route... But its up to you brother... good thing about this is you can make just about anything(within reason) work... Good luck

I double end case in the jar when I use pints myself. I put about half inch of dry verm on bottom, put in brf mix, then top off jar with dry verm like half pint jar. This helps with moisture too imo, and reduces the amount of brf mix you are actually putting into a jar, which = less material to colonize. Works for me, but I prefer half pint jars for cakes, so get some of those if you can. Good luck with your grow and research liquid mycelium before your next syringes get there. You can use a couple cc's from a single syringe to make up to a quart of liquid mycelium. That is enough to make 100s of jars and by then you should have a good handle on everything.

>I knocked up

Who ever started using "knock up" for inoculation, I hate him from the deepest place of my heart. This is just stupid.
