1st-timer: cubensis jar (Thai)
    #362378 - 07/28/01 05:10 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

After numerous failures (like cooking the honey water with a fish tank heater :) I finally have some colonized cakes. For the substrate I used coir mixed with BRF, and maybe a little too much water. I've innoculated the jars with honey-water mycelium, and it started to grow like crazy...all jars 100% colonized @ approx. 7 days.
Now comes the strange part: The mycelium is not white, but brownish-yellow. In the honey-water they were white, but the cake is brown. I first thought it to be some kind of a contamination, but all the jars are the same.
Please tell me that it's normal, and it's because of the coir!
Thanx!

not sure if this is the same but. I had made some honey water and the mycelium was white at first after leaveing it for a few days it became yellow. I belive that it got some of the color from the honey. I innoculated some rigth away and they came out great. However i innoculated some more later and with in a day or too there was the sour smell of Bactiria.
So i would say as long as you have a good earthy/mushroom smell they should be fine. but if they smell sour you may want to toss them.
Allso i think you said you may have put too much water. I belive if mycelium sits in water it will become yellow. there may be too much water/condensation in the jars.
