air exchange ques

i usued tin foil to cover my jars during sterilization, and i left them on for incubation. could i take them off without risking infection? will the covers cripple growth rate?

i leave the tinfoil on during colinization just in case..just as long as you dont have it taped down or anything it should hurt the growth rate..plenty enough ways for air to get in..

The tin foil may be removed after about 60 to 75% colonization but there is still a small risk of contamination. The key to quick colonization rates is good air exchange. This can easily be obtained by some filter discs. No, i'm not talking about the disc you use to make coffee with! These are special filter discs that filter down to 0.3 microns. They can be found at these two sites:

buy filter disks from micron magick, great quality and $15 for 100 disks. they are big disks too, if you cut them right you can cap two 1/2quart jars with one disk. very cost effective, no shipping inside the US and far faster results.
