humidity too high!
    #3900190 - 03/10/05 09:29 PM (19 years, 22 days ago)

Here's my setup

Well, I went and got the nice hygro from the cigar shop like everyone said, and I got a 20gal air pump too... I love this setup now but my humidity is always going up to 99%! I need to mist my casings because my last one dried out... but in return I'm getting humidity so high it keeps wanting to overlay. Now which should I do? Stop spraying or just let the humidity go up? I fan it almost every hour and the hum goes down to about 94% and then goes back up to 99% within a few minutes. I could leave the lid open a little but then I'm inviting contams. The temp is at 72. Does the light make it more humid (it's a low power blue aquarium lamp)? Any sugestions on something I could sit inside the chamber to lower the humidity? Salt maybe?

hello, I don't think there's anything wrong with the light, it shouldnt effect the overall heat enough to think about. If there is a way, you should try adding some condensing chambers before the hum. air enters the fruiting chamber. All i can think of.

The hygrometer measures the amount of moisture in the air... 100% is fully saturated meaning the air cannot hold any more moisture, so 99% is practically full saturation

ok, what method are you using to introduce humid air into your system?

However you are providing air exchange, do more of it.

Can this cause the casings to dry out?
So just fan the hell out of it?
Thanks a ton by the way

If you are misting your casings properly they will not dry out. And you're welcome.

Keep misting your casings. Increase air exchange however you can (including manual fanning as much as you can). Only mist when you have to. Try and put some holes (2 or 4 1/2"-1" holes or something) around the chamber. Start wth fewer smaller holes and make more of them/bigger until you get humidity low enough. When you want the humidity there (if you have cakes or right when you put the casings in the chamber ect) you can stuff the holes with Polyfil and the humidity wont excape (well) and then when its time to pin and you want to drop the humidity, pull the polyfill out.

I'd put the holes right at the height of the casings surfaces.

Doo what dog and scatman said.

Remember, until pinning begins, you cannot have too much humidity (don't let the casings get saturated though)! Once pinning begins, you will need to lower the humidty a bit!

just OPEN holes? or should I cut out some coffee filters to cover the holes? Can I take out some Perlite to lower the humidity?

Open holes should be fine, the pump runs 24/7 and will have positive pressure on the box, nothing will be able to get in. If you put coffee filters or anything (besides screen mesh to keep flies out) over the holes, you'll keep in the humidity.

Taking out some perlite may help. But if it still goes across the whole bottom of your chamber, it'll still have the same surface area and probably keep it just about as humid. Try to decrease the surface area of the perlite, that would also reduce humidity if you dont feel comforatable with the holes...they'll be fine though

I can tell you from experience that if you try to heat the pod it acts against the humidity. If you add too much water to the perilite it doesn't leave enough surface area for water to evaporate.

yeah, you can also try letting the pearlite drain more before putting it in the chamber and/or put less pearlite in there.
