Pearlite AND bubbler?
    #622245 - 04/29/02 12:37 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

So my brothers, girlfriends, cousins, etc.... who is growing shatake mushrooms, wanted to know-

In the terrarium, if hes using pearlite AND a bubblier to humidity, will their be any problems with this? Too much humidity?

He wants to use both, because hes afraid that the bubbler alone will not be enough.

Perlite is PLENTY for cakes, moist perlite keeps a humidity of 95%

with a bubbler, it's abit much

How about converting the bubbler to take care of Air exchange, so you don't have to fan...

He could do that, but his terrarium isnt completely airtight, so I'm afraid that some humidity will escape with just pearlite or just a bubbler.

Your right though, I'll test it before he sticks the cakes in their just to make sure humidity is high enough. He'll move the airpump outside (currently in) the terrarium and it'll get oxygen in their, with the airpump ouside, the humidity was a little low (w/o pearlite), but with the pearlite it should even out? Right?

Moist perlite will keep a humidity of around 95%. Go to home depot and buy a piece of plexi-glass or "lucite-tuf"(high impact acrylic) Cut out a new top for your aquarium. This stuff is easy to drill and put grommets in, to keep your setup airtight. you can put the airpump hose going into the top, and drill/cut a small hole in the bottom of the terrarium. C02 is heavier than o2, so the Co2 will build up in the bottom. With the 02 being pumped in through the top, Co2 is forced out the bottom hole. My friends airpump is sitting on top of their Hepa-Machine (intake of pump is on bottom) so only CLEAN air is pumped in. A "check-valve" is put on the end of tubing coming out of the bottom hole, so no air can go in that tube.
