Re: Owsley's Van Allen Belt theory [Re: hobgoblin]

I think that really it is people with an innate desire to understand themselves better (on the whole this is) that take entheogens, and so also LSD. I do accept that a small number do it to get "Fucked Up!" tho.

So these people, who are obviously the more intelligent of the bunch around at the time because they are innately interested in their own development and the social arena (they did protest on wars, and peacefully for the most part too) are taking LSD.

So really what I'm saying is that the LSD didn't cause the peace movement, but rather the peace movement COINCIDED with LSD use in the same group of individuals. They were seeking 2 things:
1) World change (through world peace)
2) To expand their minds (through LSD use)

Just so happened they wanted both, and lived in a time that allowed them to at least have a go at them as well. If all this happened over again now, you do have to wonder if any one would stand up for world peace like the Hippies did back then.

Well there's my litre of dogs-vomit! :stoned::mushroom2:

How would making LSD illegal change the spiritual nature of its use? People like Timothy Leary continued to be advocates for it, and today I still see plenty of people using it for spiritual purposes. Also, I'm sure there were still plenty of people back then who took it just to get "fucked up."

The more pressure the government put on this movement, the more it lost it's focus. Leaders such as Leary and Kesey started being harassed and arrested. People started getting busted left and right. People started becoming afraid. How can the movement keep it's focus in this type of environment?

I think it's pretty naive to think they temporarily "unbrainwashed" themselves only to be "rebrainwashed."

That's fine. We just have a difference of opinion here. I believe that the ideals that the "hippies" had was closer to what is the truth about life. Yes, there were a lot of people who were hippies just because it was the cool thing to do, but that doesn't mean that the ideals that the movement had as a whole were wrong. For a short while, people had unbrainwashed themselves by using psychedelic chemicals and spirituality to remove their filter of conditioning. The government then destroyed the movement which caused these people to go back to living the illusion.

couldn't they just keep unbrainwashing themselves with LSD even though it was illegal? oh wait, they did. they still kept using LSD, to this day, and in my opinion the unbrainwashing lasts just about as long as you're high.

Of course there were and are a minority of people who had ideals similar to the "hippies". We're talking about a mass shift in consciousness here, though. You can't do that with only books and religion at this point. You need a chemical to get it done.

Also, what do you make of the fact that the Hippie Love Movement didn't succeed, even though it was fuelled by LSD, wonder of wonders? Why isn't Timothy Leary King of Planet Earth? To me it looks more like a bunch of hippies, jaded and disillusioned with the status quo, took a cool drug which made them see trippy shit and have trippy ideas, and individually they may or may not have improved their lives immeasurably, but collectively they were uncohesive, scattered and disorganized. They lacked any specific direction, and that's why the movement failed. indeed, I think that calling 'it' a 'movement' is a luxury provided by our distant historical vantage point.

I've already explained this. It didn't succeed because they made the drug illegal, harassed and arrested people in the movement, used the media to promote the government's slant on the movement, created the DEA, etc..

I think the most ridiculous thing is to assume that the government is powerful enough to stop a movement like that through prohibition. Everyone here understands that making something illegal doesn't stop people from doing it. Government is way too ineffective to actually succeed in goals like that. Hell, they can't even balance a budget, let alone stop a movement.

Huh? They did it. The government can use the media to make people believe anything. You know that, Paradigm. If you're constructing a building and someone comes along and steals your blueprints, can you still make that building even if you have the tools? No, you can try, but you just end up making a fucked up building because you can't remember how it was supposed to look.

In a sense, you're right about the government stopping the movement, but it did so by giving in to one of its main goals: withdrawal from Vietnam. Without that war to protest, the hippies lost their central purpose.

Vietnam ending took away one of the biggest purposes of the movement, but the media and the DEA are the biggest reasons why it lost it's way. Ask Chinacat about the DEA's impact on the Deadhead scene. He said it was "mankind's finest hour" before "Operation Dead End". After the DEA came on tour it fucked everything up. Now imagine if there was never a law against LSD. Imagine how the scene would prosper and spread.

We're talking about a mass shift in consciousness here, though. You can't do that with only books and religion at this point. You need a chemical to get it done.

Are we really though? Was there really a huge change in consciousness? And why do we need a chemical? That seems like a bizarre assumption to me. (I could just as easily say "You can't do that with chemicals, leaders, or ideas, no, you need a quality sandwich to get that done!") It would seem to me that ideas are far more powerful than any drug.

The social changes that came about during the 60's were only one rung on a ladder. Ideas of equality had been bubbling about since the 19Th century. There was the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, Kinsey's sexual studies, etc...

The hippies didn't even really represent an enormous segment of the population, they were just a bunch of kids who had their own music, style, and a common political goal to rally around. Within the scene there was still plenty of violence, greed, dishonesty and general nastiness. It really wasn't that much different from the flappers, or the beatniks.

In Europe in the early 20Th century, there were lots of youth subcultures of communists, who believed that their new ideas would usher in a brand new era of total peace, happiness and equality. In the long run, it ended up looking like youthful naive idealism, not unlike the hippies in the 60s... only with a more concrete set of ideas.

When the Hell's Angels got involved with Kesey's scene, did it calm them down, or just bring in a bunch of unneeded aggression to the scene?

Grateful Dead concerts are just that--concerts. They may feel like some sort of utopia while they're happening, but the DEA coming in just ruins the scene--not a movement. I've seen similar things happen in the rave scene. Raves used to be such awesome events where you could feel the love and good vibes of everyone, and could go up and talk to anyone or give a total stranger a hug, and not be stigmatized. Then the DEA cracked down on them, and the whole scene just kind of died out. But the thing is, raves were never really going to change the world. Once the party was over, everyone went home and crashed. All the peace and love at the party went home with them.

sorry, I'm bad at expressing myself I guess. my point was, how come the magic wonder that was LSD wasn't able to overcome Government?

basically it looks like you're saying "given room and time to flourish, the hippie movement, fuelled by LSD, would have become unstoppable and engendered a mass shift in consciousness which would have led to a new world order, everyone happy and enlightened etc. However, the Government was too evil and powerful."

isn't that a bit like saying "given room and time to flourish, marsupials, fuelled by quality sandwiches, would have become the dominant life form on the planet, replacing mammals at the top of the food web and creating untold wonders in the fields of arts, crafts, technologies, and so on so forth..." ?

Marsupials only exist because of a geographical abberation (Australia being separated from the rest of the goings-on). they are less successful than mammals and, had they been on the same landmass, would have probably been utterly replaced. there's no place here for value-judgements.

the hippie movement apparently didn't have what it took to succeed, because, take a look, they didn't succeed. Even though they had LSD, they failed. which means LSD isn't so great after all, right? it couldn't defeat the Government, even though it had a head start in a way. if only the hippies had been organized similarly to the way Government was organized, then maybe they'd've succeeded. (of course, if they had suffered from such an organizational structure, they probably wouldn't have succeeded anyways because they'd all have had to become politicians, and we all know how effective politicians on LSD are. take a look at Tim Leary.)

What we need is a drastic and far reaching massive shift in world consciousness. I'm NOT suggesting that everyone be forced to do LSD, either. What I'm suggesting is that we legalize LSD for anyone who wants to use it. Once this happens, more and more people will begin turning on. This will create a domino effect of changed consciousness. Eventually more and more people will decide to turn on until the entire world changes it's values.

You will not be able to change the consciousness of your average zombie consumer by words. They will not make an effort to change. The only way to make them change is by giving them a chemical that will bring them pleasure and temporarily remove a portion of their filter of conditioning. The more people do this, the more people will change. The more people change, the more the tide will turn in our favor. The more the tide turns in our favor, the better off everyone will be.

Yes, the hippies were a minority. Had LSD remained legal, they would not have been.

Have you ever taken LSD with someone who you consider to be a moron? I have. They change from a moron... to a childish moron.

I think it was moronic of The Pranksters to associate with the Hells Angels.

Well, yeah. But if acid were the magical catalyst for personal change you make it out to be, wouldn't it not have been so foolish? Wouldn't giving it to the Hell's Angels have changed them, made them realize the errors of their ways and become peace loving hippies?

Guess many of you have read the el kool-aid acid test.

Yes and Keseys' group disintegrated, not because of outside forces, but because many DID become fucked up. LSD is one of the most intriguing substances, but does not hold the key to human spiritual development. Abuse is abuse and trippers are still people prone to all of the power and control games that others play.

Got CID?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I love acid... it's a hell of a lot of fun. But fun is fun, and changing the world is something else altogether.

Speaking of chemicals that changed the world, how about pennicilin? Insulin?

Alcohol, as a whole, has probably had a MUCH more profound effect on our society and culture than LSD has. In how many cultures does it play a key role in our mating habits?

To be fair, I will say that pschedelics probably had a lot of potential in the psychiatric community that was damaged irreparably when it became illegal. The same goes for MDMA. I think they could have done a much better job for the happiness and well-being of people than the prozac culture that currently dominates. I don't think it would end war as we know it, though.
