Sterilized Grain Viablilty Question

Does anyone have experience with how long sterilized grain will last before inoculation? My friend has a dozen or so quarts of sterilized grain that probably won't be inoculated with agar for a week or two after sterilization. Will this be a problem?

Nope, it shouldn't be an issue. Assuming they were sterilized for a good amount of time your grains should be fine. I've kept rye and WBS at room temps for as long as 2 weeks before inoculating.

Sounds good--thanks for the reply. They were sterilized (after steeping for 45 minutes) for the standard 60 minutes at just over 15 PSI.

i would suggest 90 min for sterilizing. 60 might be ok but don't skip out and try 45min. its to short had two batches lost to contams at that time length.
are your jars fully sealed airtight?? if not they might not keep. if I'm going to keep jars around i don't punch holes in the metal lids. pc them and they vacuum pack themselves = good forever. when i want to use them i sterilize everything and punch a hole in the top with a red hot nail and punch it through an alcohol dipped cotton swab. I've had no problem with contams this way. if your not carefull the vacuum will bring fresh air into the jar possibly bringing in contamination

My friends jars are capped off with filter disks and plastic screw tops, with two inoculation holes. They are still covered with foil and in a plastic box near a HEPA filter. should be pretty well contained...
