Optimum light for maximum growth of Salvia?
    #3804225 -

I would have thought there would be dozens of threads asking this question but I guess not.

There has got to be an optimum level of light to set as a standard as the amount of light needed for optimum growth of Salvia.

I am turning a martha into a salvia terrarium. For those of you who don't know what a Martha is, it's a 5' tall transparent portable closet they sell at K-Mart. It has a humidifier in it.

All I have for windows is a large north facing window. It's about 30'' wide, and 6.5' tall. I figure I'll set it up right against that window, and the entire window is dedicated to the martha.

Will that be more, or less than optimum?

I'm guessing less, but I'm not sure by how much.

What light level works best for you?

160 watts of fluorescent lighting works really well for me during the cold months. They grow well next to a window as long as they get 3-4 hours of good sun a day.

Strong BLUE spectrum Fluorecents.
(and a very high RH = a happy plant)

I think i'm pushing my salvias to the limit when it comes to light levels. They are growing in a glasshouse in full sun which I grow cacti in, it has a light shadecloth to keep the temps down but it still gets a lot of sunshine. Once I got them acclimatized to this they grew like mad, 2-3 foot in a couple of months.

I took cuttings off these plants and left them to root in the glasshouse still sitting in full slightly shaded sun.. they took a while but roots have sprung now.. I only misted them once or twice. I think if you want a lot of plants and leaves this is definatly the best way to go. Electricity free too.

:sun: Yeah, I'd say that sunlight is the optimum light for maximum growth of Salvia (and all other plants). :yesnod:   Damn, I wish I had a glasshouse/greenhouse to grow in, those of us with one or two decent windows have to supplement. I prefer those CFL spirals, cuz I didn't want 4 foot long flouros in my apartment. But anyway you can, give those girls some more light, they'll thank you for it.

this is an interesting topic...
all my salvias are now outdoors (yeah, taking a pounding of the summer sun but doing fine) and i have noted that the ones that have grown taller were next to other taller/bushier plants that made shadow on it... it's not just a matter of light i believe, but of shade as well!
