Soil pH for Salvia.

I know that Salvias like slightly acidic soil, so when i was (re)potting my plants & cuttings i tried to make up the best soil (mix), based on being high fertility/ organic matter content/ well drained/ acidic.
Thing is, the webpages i looked at mentioned loam being acidic, yet i have now been told it is alkaline.
Is it possible to check soil pH (with normal pH paper or how?)?
I know it is possible to buy soluble salts which turn the soil acidic, but i am worried about making the soil TOO acidic. Does anybody know Salvias optimum soil pH range, how to test accurately for it, and how to tweak the pH towards it?

To test the ph:
put a spoon full of soil in a glass of distilled water,
stir and let it settle for a few minutes. Then test the pH of water with an indicator strip.
I?d say the pH of 5-6 is about right.
