Buy the stuff at the store that's labeled for use with cacti. It should drain well and have a relatively high sand content.

Just use it straight from the bag. Cacti are tough. Water them only occasionally, and give them as much sunlight as possible.

For my peruvians and pachanois, I use plain potting soil and they do fine.

For soil I use John Inning's number 3 mixed with a shops own brand of cactus compost (50/50) + a few tbs of garden lime + handfull of grit sand mixed in.
The word on the street is that lime helps keep the ph from dropping as the soil breaks down. Acidic soil increases the chances of rot + the cacti prefer slightly alkaline soil. I am also hoping to add some calcium to my soil (crushed shells or something similar).

I have read that you don't want soil with a high peet moss content. The peet tends to go acid over time, while cactus prefers a slightly more alkaline soil. If you want more info. read on:

Good Luck! Keep us posted.

Just get some commercial cactus potting mix. This works fine as is for many species like San Pedro. You can add perlite for drainage. For some very rot sensitive cacti like Ariocarpus you would use maybe 1 part cactus soil to 2 parts perlite.
Schultz cactus mix is decent, as is Hoffman's. Both are very common.

Dont put too much complexity into it. There is very rarely any need to add such things to cactus soil. Vermiculite should never be used because it compacts. Charcoal seems kind of pointless. All you need is some basic cactus soil, which can be made more draining by adding perlite, coarse large-grain sand, or lava rock. This will work for 95% of the cacti you will ever grow.
