Exclusive Interview w/Chinacat72 in My Truck

Setting: Our interview begins with Enter driving has pickup truck finding Chinacat72 in his front yard. Chinacat is politely offered a ride to an unnamed cow field where he is asked....

#1 So...How are you holding up these days?

Answer:

#2 Just so we can kind of establish some background here, can you tell us in a nutshell your liftetime experience with Entheogens?

Answer:

#3 You're currently pursuing a master's degree in some field of psychedelics, correct? Can you tell us more about this? What do hope to gain from this? What do you think you will be able to accomplish thru this?

Answer:

#4 Let's talk about Family briefly. Actually let's talk about both families: #1 your own family and #2 "the" Family. What role has family had in your life in general? Have you learned more about life thru them than Entheogens? What is the spirit of "the" Family like? Could Family and family be compared and if so how would it go down?

Answer:

#5 Are you an advocate of Ayahuasca? Can you tell us about a particular experience that stands out?

Answer:

#6 What is the primary thing that all humans should know about life itself, if there is such a thing?

Answer:

#7 You've had connections with the famous band The Grateful Dead. Do you still know the remaining members? Do they still have a fondness for Entheogens and if so, do they have any particulars?

Answer:

#8 If you could point out one flaw of Entheogen connoisseurs and their overall approach to using Entheogens what would it be?

Answer:

#9 If you could caution your generation in the year 2005 with any words of wisdom what would they be?

Answer:

#10  What is your favorite book (of any category) and why?

Answer:

#11  Coffee or tea?

Answer:

#12 I have noticed that Entheogen consumers generally have a lot of inward or introspective energy. Do you have a strong preference to privacy or do you actually find yourself to be quite outgoing and love to be around a variety of people?

Answer:

#13 Who is the most important person of the 20th century?

Answer:

#14 What will the future hold for humanity and Entheogens?

Answer:

Thanks Chinacat72 and drops him back off at home slightly buzzin'.

Overall very well. Though at this present moment I find myself in the midst of a cold that has rendered me to take medication that alters my view of conciousness. I will hopEfully get some rest tonight and be able to approach these questions with the clarity of vision required.
Sorry Enter I didn't think you would be so quick to respond.

Pf, I wish, I've been felling weird lately, I can't seem to keep grounded very well.  I think it's the winter blues, I haven't been getting my usual dosage of nature lately.

Cold weather can slow us down.

I think exercise would make an excellent natural prescription for you.

Try over one hour each day before work/school.

BTW, what is Pf? Besides the prof?

#1 So...How are you holding up these days?

Doing well. Between my 3 kids and school I'm staying very busy.

Quote:

#2 Just so we can kind of establish some background here, can you tell us in a nutshell your lifetime experience with Entheogens?

Started with LSD in the very early 80's. Had friends who went to GD concerts and brought back doses. For the first few years I was just messing around.
I liked acid alot but didn't grasp it's importance until a few years later when I decided to tour and got serious. Went from a regular American kid to someone devoted to spreading this chemical that I saw as the most important invention in man kinds history. I'm long since retired from that business, but am still devoted. My current practice of psychedelics involves around 3 trips per year of mushrooms+DMT.

Quote:

#3 You're currently pursuing a master's degree in some field of psychedelics, correct? Can you tell us more about this? What do hope to gain from this? What do you think you will be able to accomplish thru this?

I'm currently involved in a PhD program in clinical psychology. As part of this path I have to get my masters this year. My goal is to be part of a research team involved with psychedelic therapy in the treatment of mental disorders(ie addiction).  To administer psychedelics you have to have a MD, so I won't be giving the drug. My hope is to be involved in the sessions by being a guide/therapist. I want to give support by being a trust able person to the patient before, during, and after the experience. Having a PhD in psychology will give me the credentials for this. In reality the PhD is just a formality. I feel that what makes me qualified to do this is my experience with psychedelics. If I were to add together the time I have spent in psychedelic states it would be measured in years. I learned a few things during this that I think would be helpful to people entering this.
One thing I learned at a young age is that it is very helpful to be surrounded by caring ,experienced people when getting into this area. I had beautiful loving, older, and experienced people around me on tour. This really helped make my experience with LSD a positive one.

I am a firm believer in LSD. But it was my addiction to heroin that really showed me the value of this substance for those who are in the midst of a life full of suffering. If we are ever going to get psychedelics viewed in a more positive light by society it will be through science. That's why I believe psychedelic research is so important. I'm not turning my back on the "underground" movement at all I have spent my time in that area and can't do any more. So the remaining years I have left will be trying to help the good folks who are trying to show the value of psychedelics in a therapeutic context.

My motivating dream is this. A place were people who have problems or questions
can come and have a experience in a setting of complete safety, support and comfort. Imagine the benefit to this world if people had this option.

The family is every living thing that was created. The light resides in us all. The "family" are people who have realized this and try to help others through love or whatever means can make the world a kinder place.

My biological family is very special to me. I grew up a average kid in a turbulent time. As a young boy I lost my brother to the Vietnam war. I'm very different from the ethics my father lived by. I was angry at him for many years past his death. he basically forced my brother to go to Vietnam. I hated him for that. Then I grew up an realized it wasn't his fault. "forgive them for they no not what they do".

My wife and kids are great. My wife is a wonderful woman and its a privilege to share my life with her. My kids are angels. I feel I learn more from them then I teach them. The love in our house is intense. I'm really blessed.

As for the "family" I feel closer to these people then my own family.
It was a honor and privilege to be able to fall into this culture. I view it as the high point of human evolution and nothing less. I have studied with many religious groups ,but have never seen devotion anywhere near what I experienced in the early days of tour. Some of these peoples only desire in the world was to turn people on. They sacrificed greatly by giving up freedom and never regretted it.

The closeness I feel to some of my friends in indescribable. We went through things that are beyond description. Most of my friends are settled down and leading peaceful lives with kids and grand kids.

As for a comparison between my family and tour family. A simple explanation is we are all bound by love. Though the Love that binds "the family" is a love supreme. I guess I shouldn't cut my family short because the love between my wife and kids is a sacred love also. So the correlation is LOVE.

Quote:

#5 Are you an advocate of Ayahuasca? Can you tell us about a particular experience that stands out?

Sure. It's a great healer for some. I have found a way to get the same benefits without the constant vomiting. I take 5 grams of mushrooms followed 3 hours later by smoking 50mg. of DMT freebase. It's just as intense as yage, but without the constant vomiting.

As for experience to share I guess my first one. Between tours once we went down to Florida to pick mushrooms for the next tour. Everyday we were up at the crack of dawn trotting through the cow pastures that border on the everglades. One night we drank the yage and had a crazy intense experience.
The next morning I felt like I have never felt before. As we made our way out to the pastures I felt completely free. While picking the mushrooms I decided clothes were not needed. I stripped naked and walked for hours picking bags of mushrooms. My companions decided to follow my lead. There we were a group a dread locked naked hippies walking through endless cow pastors picking mushrooms. I never felt so good in my life. We also never found as many mushrooms as we did on that day. I remember having crazy animal sex with one of the girls with us in the muddy cow pasture. We we stoned free and having divine sex while surrounded by acres of fields full of magic fungi.
It was a damn good morning. :sun:

Quote:

#6 What is the primary thing that all humans should know about life itself, if there is such a thing?

I guess this would be different from person to person. For me it's love.
It's the only thing that matters to me. Not the love between your high school sweetie and you, but the LOVE.
I have experienced many states in my life. The nothingness of the Budist void to the attachment to desires. It wasn't until I got to temporarily see though veil clear eyes and see the world with unconditional love that I felt home and free. Of course this state wasn't permanent, but it gave me faith. Though I constantly fall out of touch with it I know there is a place of perfection were we all meet as one and purify in eternal love. This is very freeing.
This worldly life isn't important because like everything else in this world it doesn't last. The thought that one day part of me will rejoin the great love , has made my life very rich. I have been very fortunate to experience Gods grace.

I'll stop now because I'm trying to describe something beyond language and normal perception. Some of you know what I'm talking about. Some of you will think I'm full of shit. that's fine. To each his own and to me Love is the key.
Peace, compassion, kindness and all the other high quality's of life emanate from love. To me Christianity is a distorted negative force, but the message of Christ consciousness is the true reality.

#7 You've had connections with the famous band The Grateful Dead. Do you still know the remaining members? Do they still have a fondness for Entheogens and if so, do they have any particulars?

I have never known the band. I have been close to them in a physical context. I was close enough to Jerry once in the back of the Warfield that I could have ran over and talked to him, but settled on a smile. I had enough respect for him that I knew his space was important. Perhaps if he would of had more of it he could have escaped the dragon. We viewed ourselves as part of the team just as the band was. They played their part and we played ours. Though their part was alot more important and special then ours. Anybody could have done my job, but only one man could have done Jerry's or the other members.

As for their psychedelic use I don't know. I only believe what I read in interviews because the rumors fly around the Deadhead world faster then a teenage girls slumber party. I have read that bob Weir is fond of mushrooms. Jerry in a Rolling Stone interview said he used mushrooms to "clean out the pipes" every once in awhile.

Quote:

#8 If you could point out one flaw of Entheogen connoisseurs and their overall approach to using Entheogens what would it be?

Recklessness. I'm hypocritical on this because I have been reckless to, but learned the hard way to respect these substances. People need to educate themselves and not go eating unknown substances and doing stupid things.
Set and setting are critical. Luckily on tour we had the best set and setting as possible. Now people are not so fortunate. One good thing now days it the Internet. Back when I first started there was no Internet and what little info on psychedelics was in hard to find books. Now people have places like Erowid and the Shroomery were they can learn about these powerful substances.

Fly under the radar. Make informed decisions. Keep an open mind.
Never stop learning. Keep moving forward.
Enjoy life becuase it is trully a gift and alot of people don't get to realize this till their last breath.

Quote:

#10  What is your favorite book (of any category) and why?

I have so many. I love to read. If I had to pick one it would be Be Here Now.
It's priceless in giving insight into the psychedelic path. It helped me learn how to integrate the psychedelic experiance into my everyday life.
Ram Dass is a gift to us westerners. He has taken the wisdom of the psychedelic experiance and that of the easten philosophy and layed it out real simpy for us westerners.

Quote:

#11  Coffee or tea?

Tea definitly. I love it. I have Darjeeling black in the morning and a few cups of Green later in the day. Coffee throws my ph way off. It gives a nice quick blast of caffiene ,but it's after effects don't agree with me.
I'm into a healthy lifestyle. Meditation, yoga, tea, vegetarian diet, and
psychedelics keep me balanced. I'm not saying that this is what others should do, but it works for me.

Quote:

#12 I have noticed that Entheogen consumers generally have a lot of inward or introspective energy. Do you have a strong preference to privacy or do you actually find yourself to be quite outgoing and love to be around a variety of people?

I charish my alone time, but that becuase i'm at campus or with my kids alot.
In my younger years I only surrounded myself with "family" and viewed all other as lesser people. Now as i'm getting grey I see the pompous jerky perspective of then. Btw, this was hilarious:

Quote:

The next morning I felt like I have never felt before. As we made our way out to the pastures I felt completely free. While picking the mushrooms I decided clothes were not needed. I stripped naked and walked for hours picking bags of mushrooms. My companions decided to follow my lead. There we were a group a dread locked naked hippies walking through endless cow pastors picking mushrooms.

Thanks Enter.  I've wanted to do that for a while but never got around to typing up the questions.

Chinacat:  Thanks for answering the questions.  It was interesting.  May I ask some questions?

Quote:

1)  You said that you once talked to Ken Kesey.  Instead of discussing psychedelics and "the old days" like everyone else, you discussed law mowers or something.  Can you tell us any more details about your meeting with Ken?

2) You've said that the family members would constantly be high due to laying sheets and handling crystal all day.  How much driving was done while tripping?

3)  In your days on tour did you look like a typical Deadhead?  As we discussed in another thread today, looking like a head and having head stickers on your car could cause the cops to know you are a head.  Weren't you worried about attracting attention to yourself while you were carrying around all that crystal?

4) Close calls.  You once talked about a time when you had an ungodly amount in your backpack at a show and got stopped by the police after one of them saw a friend give you money from a non-drug related debt.  You said that was your closest call.  Can you tell us about some others?

Thanks :gd_icon:

It was during an Oakland run. Ken is a friendly guy who treats everybody with respect. We connected because 1. I didn't want to talk about the old days(like everyone else who talks to him. 2. I grew up on a farm. The thing I remember most was his handshake. It was like shaking my grandfathers hand. It was rough and strong like a farmers. He was very approachable. You could tell he was a honest logical man. I have nothing but the highest respect for Ken Kesey.
He was alot more friendly an open then Bear.

I have drove while tripping and am ashamed of it. I remember once we layed a gram and we had to drive to Oregon that night. I made it across the Golden Gate bride before I pulled over and said no fuckin way.
Usually we had a sober driver on tour.

For the first half of my years I had dreads and looked like a deadhead. I also got the constant harassment that goes with it. After awhile I took the elders advise and "cleaned up". We used to fly quite abit. When we did drive and when I was working with alot of crystal we had a pretty good system. We would caravan. The car with the magic jars in them only had a driver(usually me) that was dressed like a normal person. This car was not allowed to have any other drugs in it. Smoking pot in it was absolutely forbidden. Another car carried the blank paper. And the rest carried the dope and hippie entourage.
There is alot more stealth involved in the upper level then one would think.
I won't go into any more of it, but say as soon as the DEA came on tour things got very serious and very high tech. There were people who's job was to watch the feds in the lot. Anyone here remember the little newspaper passed around the lot called Fed Watch. Around 89 the DEA put a unit on Dead tour that traveled from show to show. The family decided to start taking pictures of them and passing them around via this little paper. Alot of money was put into counter surveillance. Of course the DEA had better toys, but we had a motivation they couldn't touch. None the less alot of people did go to jail. Usually the people in the middle.

Things are very different now I assume. Air travel isn't a luxury that is had now. You can't do a overnight round trip run to Frisco and pick up a jar without worries anymore. The whole thing has changed.

Yeah, thanks, I would love to hear some stories about Bear, too.

That story about picking mushrooms sounds like alot of fun.

I heard Bear used to sell microdot out of the corner booth in Cantor's Jewish Deli in L.A. back in the day before he moved to Frisco, and originally had red, green, and blue, but eventually only made the blue for a while. I heard his Dad was a general. Oh, maybe I should let Chinacat tell the storys. I bet he's probably got a better Bear story than that.

My Dad said the mid west was flooded with blue microdot way back when.

My experiences with Bear are just conversations with him at shows. During the 80's and early 90's bear made a living selling his buckles and jewelry at the Greenpeace booths at Dead shows. I would run into him because I was real tight with the Greenpeace folks. I enjoyed talking to him. He is really guarded to talk to, but I think he let his guard down for me cause I didn't sit there and grill him with LSD questions(that and my friends would by buckles to give to people, so we were good customers). He is a very opinionated man with strong beliefs. I found some of his beliefs to be quite extreme, but he really is a smart man. We had a good argument once about the diet of humans.
Usually I would be at the Greenpeace booth and bump into him and have some light conversation about how tour was going.

One thing I remember is a run in back stage once. Getting backstage at a Dead show wasn't that hard if you had been on tour for awhile. Getting backstage didn't really mean alot. You basically just saw the crew. There was "backstage", and then there was backstage that no-one got into except the band and crew.
I was hanging around the catering tables getting some free grub before heading back out. I hear two people arguing about something that happened along time ago and here comes Bear. He stops and says "don't get caught up back here kid,
the scene back here is toxic and filled with ego, stay out in the lot with the real family".
I also vaguely remember being at the Greenpeace booth once and we were all standing around talking to Fran(The head of Greenpeace on tour at the time).
As with all Dead shows people were walking around slinging doses and everything else imaginable. Owsley doesn't look anything like a deadhead(in fact he looks like a cop). Some kid walks up to him and says "dose's need any doses?" He just walked away. We all laughed. Here's this kid trying to sell ten strips to Friggin Owsley!! LOL I guess you had to be there ,but it was funny as hell. I imagine it probably happened to him several times. he liked the lot scene in the 80's. He would be out strolling around checking it out. Most people didn't know who he was and the ones who did don't go running around going "OMG there's bear".

He's a very opinionated man and his name Bear is very fitting. I took alot of his rap with a grain of salt. That said he's fucking Owsley and is the man.
He set the ethics and the standards for the LSD family's. His beliefs about quality and the sacredness of crystal is something I wish would always be lived up to. He's another one of the key few who made the psychedelic revolution possible. It was an honor to be able to speak with him.

Wow, thanks Chincat. I love reading stories like those!

Here's an Owsley interview in PDF form if anyone wants to read it. Here's a piece from Timothy Leary's book "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out" (which I believe is just pieces from his book "The Psychedelic Experience") about Owsley and his theory on the Van Allen Belt that I transcribed a few years ago......

Quote:

"Oh man, how beautifully it all fits together. Dig, the first atomic fission occurred in December 1942.
The Van Allen belt is a thick blanket of electronic activity protecting this planet. What is the earth? A core of molten metals covered by a thin layer of soft, vulnerable, organic tissue. Life nibbling away, nibbling away at the rock beneath. All life on this plantet is a delicate network unified. Each living form feeding on the others, and being eaten. The Van Allen belt is the higher intelligence protecting earth from lethal solar radiation, and it's in touch with every form of living intellegence on the earth-vegetable, animal, human.
Now dig, the supreme intelligence sees that man has rediscovered atomic energy. Wow! We gotta stop those cats before they disrupt the whole living network. the only thing DNA fears is radiation. That's why the Van Allen belt is there.
Ok, now get this. Four months after the first fission, Hofmann accidentally, ha ha, rediscovers LSD, which is now psychoactive.
Hofmann first synthesized LSD in 1938, but it gave no hit. No turn-on. Now why is it that Hofmann handles LSD in 1938 and nothing happens and then in 1943, three months after atomic energy is released, he puts his finger on lysergic acid and gets flipped out? What happened? Did Hofmann suddenly get careless? Or had LSD suddenly been changed into a psychedelic chemical? Competent chemists just don't change thier handling of compounds. Hofmann's techniques are standard.
Now dig, The atomic fission in December 1942 changed the whole system of energy in this solar system. The higher intellegence decides to make a few simple changes in the electronic structure of some atoms and zap! We have LSD, and incredibly powerful substance that is the exact antidote to atomic energy. People take LSD, and flash! They get the message and start putting things back in harmoney with the great design. Stop war! Wear flowers! Conservation! Turning on people to LSD is the presise and only way to keep war from blowing up the whole system."

Thanks, Chinacat. I can def. see how the folks backstage might think their shit didn't stink, even if it was no big deal to be backstage. People let some silly stuff go to their head. There's plenty of room for everyone to hang out in the parking lot to kick it. Why would you want anyone to be left out? That's some funny stuff, trying to sell Agustus Owsley Stanley III acid. I wonder if anyone ever tried to sell him his own product.

I read his opinion about the diet of humans in that interview Learyfan posted up. Who would have ever thought that the most infamous acid chemist in history would be a full flegged devout carnivore, as well as a proponent of using fosil fuels! He definately has some interesting theories that he talks about in that interview, but I'm definately not buying it all hook, line, and sinker. I think Chinacat's a vegetarian, so he must not have made that great of an argument for the consumption of meat.

The fact that his product turned on countless people is enough to make him one hell of a guy in my book, but it's refreshing to read his opinions, many of which clash directly with what most folks view as the stereotypical dead head, even if I am skeptical of some of what he has to say.

I have this book called TRIPS and in it there's a section on Owsley and they talk about how Owsley would put his hands on the machines while synthesizing LSD because he believed you had to focus all your good vibes on it and channel it into the LSD. That gave me crazy chills.

Good bump, Vinsue.  I just read all of Chinacat's posts again.  Really, really interesting stuff.

Thanks for the bump.

This place really needs a new ChinaCat like character. Assuming that if/when they show they're not trolled out by kids.

I hear ChinaCat is still around, possibly browsing/posting under a different name (per a mod)..not sure why that would be though.

ChinaCat changed the way I view psychedelics completely. He was on a completely different level than any other poster on any message board. Makes me so sad he still doesn't post here. I wish I could have a chance to message him or just talk to him once. Hope all is well for him. I love the way he talked about love.

Funny how somebody can almost be 'mythical' around here like Chinacat and yet he refers to someone like Jerry Garcia as just 'totally out there amazing' or whatever, really puts into perspective how interesting somebody like Jerry would have been to know.
