The best way to get off a bad trip is to murmur to yourself over and over, "Oh my God! What have I done?" Seriously though, vigorous exercise such as running in place or pushups, may not be the best way, but it is the fastest to come down. This acclerates your metabolism many times thus ending the trip much sooner. Also may help to center one's self and put the focus on the body instead of on fearful thoughts. Also singing or playing an instrument may help to shift to another center in the brain. Water can have a very grounding affect. See if you can get the freakee into a warm (not hot) bathtub. Try to get your friend to talk to you. Ask about something that he /she feels positive about such as a hobby, car, sport, etc. Don't go into emotional issues such as family, relationships, politics or religion. Good luck!

Play some soft tunes, and assure him he's fine.

Change your environment. Move to a different room, change the music or go into the garden.

According to Wavy Gravy from the Woodstock Behind The Music, asking someone their name is a good place to start. Unless they can't remember their name, of course, then they're SERIOUSLY on a bender. But I agree with the above: change the environment, add or remove lights, change the music, and remind them that they took a drug, it WILL wear off, and they're only tripping.

first aid kit should always have a bottle of niacinaminde... and if you can get 'em, maybe a few valiums... prepare beforehand by reading grof, or masters & houston, or ram dass... ~~~ so the husband comes into the kitchen and says to the wife, "dear, we've got our hands full with this crisis resolution in the living room, and this other guy is getting a bit lost; could you calm him down?" so the wife dries her hands off from doing the dishes, takes the guy who's having a bit of a rough time and ask's him what's bothering him... & he says something about being confused with the trip and his life and... so the woman hugs him and says " your life is a river, a river, a river..." and the the guy says something about wanting his wife here to help him resolve whatever, and the woman softly says" your wife is a river, a river, a river..." and the no-longer lost guy sighs, smiles, and goes back to enjoying the rest of his psychedelic experience... ~~~ sometimes a little attention, a little TLC, and a little refocusing is all it takes, dig?
