Pressure cooker leaking!
    #3752283 - 02/08/05 08:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I filled a ton of jars with rye and water yesterday, waited my 24 hours and now have pressure cooker trouble! The pressure cooker is leaking from the side, I guess the rubber gasket does not have a proper seal. I don't know what I can do to fix it..it looks the way it always did. The cooker is only 2 months old, do the rubber rings wear out that quickly? Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

check to see that it's seated correctly, apply a little petrolium jelly to the rubber seal.

2 months? I've had rubber gaskets last for 2 years, so something isn't right. Inspect the gasket: Any tear or wear that you can see?

If your gasket is toast (which it sounds like), order a replacement. Whatever you do don't jerry-rig your pressure cooker.

Good luck!

After leaving the cooker on for 5 minutes, the leaking stops, I suppose that the heat makes it form a seal. Pressure is definitely building up so the seal is fine now. Still, the cooker wasn't leaking at all before, so I think I'll try and return it. 2 months is a pretty shitty life expectancy for a 200 dollar cooker!

First make sure the ring is pressed evenly and firmly around the lid lip. Mine often twists a little on one side which causes it to leak until I open it, and press it back against the lid top again.

If the problem persists, it could be due to a manufacture defect. It could also be due to "Over-filling" your PC with jars or jars that are too tall, holding the lid up slightly higher on one side. If none of that seems to be the problem, then you may have melted your seal enough to deform it. You may be PCing on high too long.

In any event, if you have the receipt, take it back and get another. Then start saving your money for a better quality PC. More expensive store brands are just more expensive store brands. They are not any better, they are all made equally just as cheap. Some just last longer or look better.

AA-PC is one of the only ones that is still producing semi-comercial PC's. All others have failed, all gasket models are home-models. They are the "George Foremans" of electric burners... By the way, a GF is only a coffee heater element on a teflon coated aluminum plate. They make great incubation chamber heaters!

Try the petroleum jelly or better yet use a tephlon based lubricant called "Magic lube". It works great on my Mirro.
BTW what PC do you have? AA's are a couple hundred dollars but even my 22 qt Mirro is only $100. Obviously yours isn't an AA given that it has a rubber seal.
