pressure cooker problems
    #1412397 - 03/26/03 08:17 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I went and bought a 30 dollar 8qt aluminum pressure cooker. So I give it a go and once the pressure starts to build I get a steady stream of steam coming out of the "safety valve" I checked for obstructions in the main vent and there are none. Also there are droplets of water coming out the side nears the gasket.

So I'm probably gonna return this cheap POS tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone thought maybe it could still work? Is that small of leak gonna completely eliminate the pressure? Does this mean I have the heat too high?

I know its a vague question and you probably wont be able to answer for sure. Just looking for opinions.

oh and your suposed to "cook" it until the pressure gauge is were you need it... if it goes past the desired pressure your in trouble.

well it doesnt have a pressure gauge. its one of the "jiggle top" kind. And yes the safety value it there so it wont blow.......but it even says in the manual that steam shouldnt leak out of there when cooking unless the main vent is unstructed.

Yeah. I have read it thoroughly and it does talk about leakage problems but I'm just not sure if this is a broken product or if this is something I'm doing wrong.

I'm gonna innoculate one of the jars from this batch I just boiling and see what happens. Maybe it'll work out.

In the mean time I'll probably return it and get my cash. Pretty much what I planned to do before posting, but figured I check if anyone had had any experience with this problem.

Thanks for bullshitting with me anyways.

The safety valve seems to be deffect then. Is it the rubberand plastic type of gasket? Like here?

You could also try and test if the pressure cooker reaches the temperature, go here:

Actually im pretty sure now that this is a broken product. I just turned the heat down about 15 minutes ago to a level where it wasnt leaking out of the safety value. Then I removed the pressure regulator weight to see if any pressure would be released. And to my disgust not even a little steam came out.

I think its safe to say my PC is not maintaining pressure and has leakage problems.

Gayness in the Anus!

true true. But ALAS! The story may have a happy ending. I stretched out the rubber gasket a bit (as manual suggests in case of leakage). And I Pushed the safety value in and out of place a few times just to make sure it was set in there right.

Just put it on the stove again and it passed that test from FunFungi page!

So I think it just needed some tweaking. My bummer has turned into a HELL YEAH!
