Cool link!
Snowflakes are great!!! That is until a whole bunch of them go down the back of your shirt. Then, they aren't so much as cool as they are damn cold!

What's cool about snowflakes is that there're not two identical.. They're all different !

I bet there's commonalities and patterns, though; i.e. eventually there are two snowflakes very alike except for maybe one knick over there...
Cool link, though!

Actually I just heard recently (think it was on TLC or Discovery) that the whole "no two snowflakes are the same" is actually NOT true. There are MANY different kinds of snowflakes, but ALL snowflakes are alike in that they are ALL 6-sided shapes (because water molecules configure into a 6-sided crystal when they freeze). There are MANY different variations on this simple 6-sided theme, but that does not mean no two flakes are ever the same.
I mean...do you have ANY idea how many snow flakes have fallen in the history of Earth?

that's what I was thinking about a few weeks ago while tripping, the no 2 same snowflakes thing. I was look at all the snow in my friends back yard and was pondering how many single snow flakes there are right there, and then around the whole world.

No two snowflakes are exactly identical, down to the precise number of water molecules, spin of electrons, isotope abundance of hydrogen and oxygen, etc. On the other hand, it is possible for two snowflakes to look exactly alike and any given snowflake probably has had a good match at some point in history. Since so many factors affect the structure of a snowflake and since a snowflake's structure is constantly changing in response to environmental conditions, it is improbable that anyone would see two identical snowflakes. (snowflake chemistry)
Of course many flakes look identical and may even seem identical, they probably aren't. Regardless of "how many" snow flakes have fallen in the history of snow flakes, there are (usually) 100 crystals in a single normal 6-sided snow flake, and there are 10^18 (thats ten to the eighteenth power) water molecules in every crystal!!! That is probably higher than the number of snowflakes that have fallen, or at least relatively comparable.
We are just giant ants...

Amazing photos there. Does anyone know if snowflakes are mathematically perfect, symmetrically? Has anyone studied the corresponding dimensions of the ridges/shapes etc of a snowflake? Any info on this?
I ask because the divine ratio (PHI) is a subject of interest to me, and I wonder how if it fits into these snowflakes somehow.

being that i grew up in a warm climate area, i've never really been used to snow. now that i live near the arctic circle, this winter (though relatively mild for around this time) i've finally taken the time to look at snow flakes.
a classmate and i went to have a cigarette outside of school and we were just admiring the snow falling down 2 weeks ago. i took a look at a snowflake that fell on my jacket and i thought to myself "shit..they really do look like those paper snowflakes that you cut up!" considering my classmate is also from a warm climate area, she was really excited about it too. we then went into the student common room area and started talking about how snowflakes actually DO look liek snowflakes and they all started to laugh at us.

Those pictures are amazing. They look more like something made on a computer than real snowflakes. Definatly bookmarking that one.
