A threat made to our community today - 3Dshroom

We've had some rather distressing news brought to our attention today, in discussions with 3Dshroom by one of our own admins and things 3D has said in IRC chat that was also brought to us we've unfortunately been threatened now in public by 3D.

This is not a 'lets burn 3D' post, it will however no doubt infuriate some and I understand that.

Now a indepth discussion with 3D and Geo (exigent maven is Geo) yielded some seriously disturbing things, and I think everyone needs to see this because of its serious implications:

These are words on an internet screen, but comments like 'shoot that canadian/californian' and the last conversation I take deadly serious as do all the admins.

In case it wasn't obvious 3D has finally admitted openly to hacking Vamps underbelly site and deleting the whole thing. Something he's denied over and over again when confronted with it.

I think the main reason for posting this publicly is simply to keep people informed of any potential troubles that may arise in the future. The conversation I was having with 3D this morning started out very civil, and I acknowledged that I have been all for getting 3D's personal account unbanned. Unfortunately, the administration here works upon majority opinion and the majority is not in favor of unbanning his account at this time. I went so far as to suggest that he simply calm down and revisit the issue after other recent happenings have calmed down, as now is not the time to bring up more controversial debate. At this point he essentially declared war against us and made threats against the Shroomery community as well as its administrators, as exhibited in the partial transcripts above.

I have been trying to be as fair to 3D as I can, but given his attutide at the culmination of our conversation today my opinion has changed. It now appears 3D is in fact as unstable as some people have suggested he always has been, and it is also very apparent that he still harbors very negative ill will towards many if not all of the administrators.

Our intentions in posting this is not to defame or insult him, but rather to let the community know what is going on, that the community is under threat, and that if something were to happen (ie. the site goes down), you will be better appraised of why this may happen. It is unfortunate it has come to this, but we feel that better posting some public information about this in the event that 3D rallies his supporters behind him and attempts to slander or defame us. I apologize to the community for involving you in this uglyness, but the majority of the admins thought it important we do so.

I've been debating whether to publicly address this. Since you have brought it up, I will state my own personal opinion. Note that I am by no means a computer expert and this is just me being cautious.

I would suggest that anyone concerned about their account and any sensitive material they may have within, change their passwords. It is almost surely not necessary, as 3D's copy of the database is over 1 year old, and all the passwords are contained in an encrypted MD5 hash format. However, MD5 hash is not impenetrable and can be hacked given the time and resources (even so, it would take many weeks/months by brute force method). So, if you want to take a little extra protective step, you may as well change your password if you haven't done so in the last year. Again, this is probably not necessary, but it is adviseable for anyone to change their passwords from time to time.

In my view, a public post has potential to be good and bad.
Firstly, there's the panic factor. No need to alert the populace, and any site-wide statement could make everyone worry, and give 3d exactly what he wants.

But the time required to change a password out is minimal, and i'm all for it.

Maybe a mass pm sent to all at-risk users regarding the possibility?

Restrict a database search to all users registered before the database in question, spend 15, 20 minutes putting commas in between each of their names, pm, and designate a thread in here for questions.

Probably the safest option, but we really have no way of determining the likelyhood of anything along these lines being done.

The general membership is not at any significant risk. Again, it would take a significant amount of time and effort to crack a single password from an MD5 hash. Realistically, doing this to every member wouldn't be feasible. Additionally, as some have pointed out, there isn't much to gain in so doing, since all that can be done is coming in here and reading your PMs (which are limited by time constraint anyway), and then maybe flood the BB with your account or whatever the hell would happen. The only reason I suggested changing your passwords is largely for piece of mind. It would be advisable, but this is not cause for emergency concern on the part of our users. We're only trying to keep you informed.

Having seen this thing from the inside and the out, being the devil's advocate for so long mostly behind closed doors. I can say that, though 3D's actions, while not kosher at many times, can be understood in the context of a person who feels like they were abandoned. Doesn't mean what he did or is doing is necessarily right. But I think it can be understandable why one would feel and act out like he has done.

On the same side of the coin, treatment of 3D by the admins hasn't always been kosher at times, but at times definitely warranted too. As thescientist said, this is a big game of he said she said with lots of quarks woven in.

All I ask, is put yourself in either of the two positions. I know we're loyal to shroomery, but don't forget 3D was admin of shroomery and was very loyal to it too, so loyal he wanted to come back even when he was wrongly defamed at times, or when deals were perceived as not being held up. Don't forget that for some of you OTDers he brought OTD back for you while some of us, me included, were gunning to continue with the "closing of OTD experiment." Does this make him a saint? Certainly not, but he's not the devil he's made out to be. It's noted here he hacked tdub. Definitely not one of those kosher things. But I would safely bet a bit too that he never did anything to hurt shroomery intentionally like was done to tdub. And I don't think 3D is out to get any general members, this is drama between him and the admins.

His recent actions have certainly made some rethink their support of 3D, and it's no surprise. But simply try to understand his position before throwing stones. Because I would bet quite a lot that many of you would perhaps act the same. Remember that a lot of the story some of us have heard came directly from our current admins. Not saying that they've intentionaly skewed anything, I would have faith in them not to. But we're getting information from a side of the debate that was heavily emotionally involved and viewed things in their own human and natural way. What they say certainly isn't gospel based on the fact that they are humans too and perceive things as humans do, with their own thoughts intentions and desires.

So in conclusion, I know he doesn't seem like the angel at the moment, and perhaps certainly isn't in a lot of our eyes just because we'd like all of this to end, I know i want it to end, and it's certainly made me question why i bother to defend and listen to anything said by either side anymore - echo geo's sentiments here. But all i ask is to try to understand both sides before making final judgement. Rationality is always better than emotionality.

Its funny, 3D keeps saying how he tried to make peace with all of us. The irony, oh the irony in that.

Every conversation I had with him was him lashing out at me and basically bringing up the past. I repeated the same thing over and over, move on and then we can talk.

Problem is as he's showing now and in the past he won't move on. He will not let go, he will not try to put it in the past.

I'm a forgiving guy, but 3D has given no reason for anyone to give him another chance because we know just how much anger he has over something that is not far from 2yrs ago.

Just ask yourself, would you ever trust a guy who had a computer run for 8 weeks to hack a password in order to delete a website of his old roomate?

The words 'grow up, move on' keep ringing through my mind and unfortunately in 3D's mind he still is focused on revenge and getting back at everyone who hurt him.

Well 3D you're life will never be anything but petty and sad if you don't grow up and move on with your life. This is beyond ridiculous, its making me question your sanity, no joke, I really wonder now.

I imagine that this rehash at old wounds would stem from everything else in his life falling apart :shrug: .  I do not know though.  I was not here for this fiasco, nor do I know him (3DShroom).  I did however use the search feature and read a lot of the posts on the subject, as well as these 'harmful' chat logs.  I also read posts at www.sacredshroom.org .  It is scary really.  I moderate at another website, and it makes me now consider more thorough security measures.

It is like that story where a kid wrongly accuses a teacher of wrong doing, and later when out of guilt, asks the teacher what can be done for restitution, the teacher picks up a dandelion and says 'this dandelion represents the lie you told.'  the teacher then blows on the dandelion and spreads the seed things everywhere, as they blow in the wind the teachers says 'what has been done can never be undone.  i will never be able to hold all of those seeds again.  they are out there.  just like that lie.'

Then why did you feel the need to bring it to light that 3D finally admitted to doing something? If you've moved on then it wouldn't matter anymore, old news, what's in the past is in the past. I know in the post columbine and 9/11 days we're all on edges about "I'm going to shoot you" jokes, but even coupling that with the admission he did what he did in a post in the public forum, doesn't indicate to me that you've moved on, especially by dragging it out into public spectacle. But that wasn't the point of my original post.

All i'm saying is to look at it from both sides, but I'm not saying this to you because you're on one of the polar opposite sides; which I'm not sure why you feel the need to reply to me since you didn't really address any point I made.

I'm going to show I've moved on by not responding to this thread anymore.

Hey you were pushing to have him let back, I know that you've given him the benefit of the doubt over many. I do know that I'm no angel in this whole thing, but until 3D brings drama back to us I never even give that nonesense a thought.

But when someone threatens this community its our duty to alert everyone. Instead of playing devils advocate why not focus on what is some pretty serious stuff that he has just said.

You can believe what you want Neuro, I don't give this guy more than a passing thought. When someone threatens the website I don't care who it is I'm going to make everyone aware of the situation as I think its very important for people to see why we don't let 3D back, why we are so mis-trusting of the guy.

Don't forget 3D is claiming his account at the domain hosting company was illegal accessed to take the domain back from him. A charge which has never been answered by you or any other admin. That's if we want to speak about crimes.

A threat against the community? I don't remember him asying he's going to do anything to the community, just some hypothetical banter about shooting two people.
