The Shroomery Switchover - Important Announcement

We are nearing the big change over for the shroomery, we are hoping to be off our current host by the end of this month and be up and running in the early days of July.

We are still not sure of how long the website will be down, but we expect anywhere from a few days to a week.

The good news is the Shroomery is moving to a great server that will ensure that the shroomery will be secure and safe for a long time to come.

We will announce the shut down date in the Off Topic discussion when we know exactly the time we will be going off line.

See you on our new server!

Why does the entire site need to go down anyway? as an aspireing (sp?) network admin. there has got to be a better way. ex. Lockdown the message boards, trip reports, etc a couple hours before the switch, leaving the entire site readable. Then take the site and transfer it to the other server, turn back on all the features, so that you basicly have the main site crippled and a backed up fully functioning mirror. then after the bugs have been worked out of the move (theres bound to be a few) switch the dns records to make the mirror the main site, after everything is said and done you can give the go ahead to the previous company to kil your account and delete he crippled site. just my 2cents but im sure you guys have your reasons. I just hope this new server handles the large databases better.

That is what we are going to do windex. We will disable any scripts that add anything to the database since we will be copying it to the new server. There will be as little downtime as possible.

well good, i was just suggesting that because i read that there could be up to a week of downtime, but for swtching like that you shouldnt be down more then a couple hours for some poeple (usualy outside north america) while the dns gets converged, and still the other people should just end up getting the crippled site.

windex we are just warning just in case we have some big problems, we don't expect a week's worth but we want people to know that its a possibility, although a remote one :smile:

Hopefully everything will go smoothly, maybe we'll see only a day or less of interuption, we can hope for the best.

Its actually started alread, 3D has begun moving things now and we should know soon if there are going to be any snags.

There are many problems with the software that was used for the old BB. There are many hackable parts that have been found in it recently. PHP, if on the right server, is faster than cgi(perl). With as much traffic as we are getting now, the old system would be a lot slower. Once everything is on the new server there should be no problems with speed and we will be adding on features once we have time(like a quote system). Any problems you have with the board can usually be fixed. Tell us how we can improve it. That is what we are here for!
