My Goodbye

Dear Shroomery Members

I regret to inform you that I will be leaving the Shroomery.  There have been many things going on behind the scenes in the past month.  I've tried my hardest to work things out with Ythan, Thor, geokills and papaver.  We had a meeting on Fri Dec 05 where it was basically myself against Ythan, Thor, geokills, papaver, Anno and matts.  It was slightly productive but I really couldn't get any of my opinions out without at least a few people trampling on them telling me I just wasn't getting it.  I was sitting there trying to work it out with them and I was threatened several times, if I did not agree with every demand of their's, I would be left to pay for the rest of our current hosting contract (roughly $5000 over the next 10-12 months).  This did not encourage me to try and smooth things out with them, but I tried anyway.  I haven't spent many hours a day on the site as a user, then moderator, then administrator to have everything I've worked for taken away from me in a flash.

They are trying to help improve the future of the site, but they went about it in the totally wrong way.  In the process they have totally alienated me.

I feel I can no longer trust a few of the people at the top, and it's time for me to move on.  I put all my trust in Ythan and Thor when I gave them the username/password combos for many important accounts, incase I ever disappeared for some odd reason.  They in turn betrayed me and accessed many of my personal accounts at different sites, namely gkg.net where they took control of the domain names through unlawful means.  I really could have gotten over this fact had they been honest with me about how they did it, but none of them would be honest and forthcoming with me.  They also locked me out of the server while they downloaded all the data from it.

A few weeks ago I worked out a deal with Ythan which he agreed to.  This would have made Ythan and I equal partners in the site.  He later felt that this agreement was not satisfactory for him and gave me absolutely zero indication that he was not happy.  I had absolutely no time to prepare for any events that have happened behind the scenes.  I'm going through a few changes in my personal life and I feel that he chose to do this now so that he would catch me between a rock and a hard place, and it would be easier for him to get what he wanted.

I know I've made a few mistakes over the last 3 years in my moderator/admin days, but everyone does.  I've been through more bullshit and dealt with more drama than pretty much anyone else at the site, but this by far takes the cake.  I have a great love for the site, but this whole takeover has deminished much of the love I had for the site and a few of the people on it.  I hope you can all see where I am coming from with my decision.

I would like to start a new mushroom related website in the near future.  At this time I'm going over some of the domains that are available and have caught my eye.  I would love to see some, if not all of you, be a part of the new site.

I have come to know many of you fairly well over the past few years and I would love to hear some of your ideas/suggestions/opinions.  Again, I can't stress how much I thank all of you for your continued contributions to the site throughout the time you've been here.  Without your support the site wouldn't be nearly what it is today.  Many of you have helped enlighten people, or at least entertained them.  I wish you all the luck in the world with your future plans.  From what they tell me the DNS info was changed at 8:00 tonight and the DNS will be fully changed to point to a new server in about 24 hours.

I, for one, appreciate everything you have done for this site. I'm sorry to hear some people treated you like that.

No you cant leave! The place will fall just like any great culture. The shroomery culture we speak of as we know it, is going to crumble. Every great culture must have a great leader like your self. Once the true smart leader goes, the culture goes for a great fall with some new idiot. You must stay, or atleast find a good leader for our culture!

I've tried explaining my feelings, and they are promptly ignored by most, as usual.

I've tried working it out and my opinions are shot down and I'm treated as a lower form of a human being. I really don't need that in my life, not from those I once trusted.

I again want to express my deepest appreciation and thanks for everything you have done for this community, Travis.  You have helped us get through some tough times and have continued to serve this site to the best of your ability for years.  While I wish things would have ultimately turned out different, this was your choice to make and I am sorry to see you go - but I know that we will meet again someday.

This is the only message board I have ever stayed at for any legth of time.  I trolled the boards for 6-7 months before I became a member. 

I know that I am relatively new here, but I really do fee like I have found a new family.  I feel a genuine connection to most of those here.

I don't always agree with everyone or like what they say, but who has family that's perfect?

I just hate to see anyone leave here on bad terms. 

I know I don't know the details, and frankly it isn't any of my business, but I wish things could be resolved in a more diplomatic fashion.  :mushroom2: :spliff: :heartpump: :kiss:

I'll leave it for Ythan or Geokills to explain that. But yes instead of one person controlling the site without anyone to be accountable to, the site will be run by committee.

i dont know enough to formulate an opinion..what i do know, is i like papaver and 3dshroom...ive never dealt with any other admins...i think geokills is kind of a tool for the whole otd mess. this site needs different voices in the mod forum.

I'm not going to engage in yet another Shroomery drama-fest. However, I will simply state, that 3D was given a good and fair choice. The choice was to remain on, as part of the new Shroomery organizational structure, as an EQUAL member of the administration with an EQUAL say, or leave.

3D has chosen to leave. I personally wanted him to stay, and I think many of us did. However, I can understand his decision, and, as much as I think it is a poor decision, I can respect it.

Frankly, I think all of this drama and speculation makes a mockery of both our offer to him (which was more than fair) and his decision to decline it (based on personal reasons).

I will no longer be involved in this sort of public discussion, as there really isn't much more to say, which isn't simply drama and speculation for the sake of drama and speculation. I have more important things to do concerning the future of this web-site.

PS: 3D, you already know, from our personal discourse, that I think you are making the wrong choice, but I respect your decision, regardless. :smile:

Who is or was in charge of paying monthly or annual fees for running this server?! 3DSHROOM I guess, well at first. Based on the original post by 3D, shroomery will move to a new physical server with a new DNS in the next 24 hours. First of all, I'm no one's tool but my own :wink:

Second, OTD is not going to be deleted two weeks (or two months) from now.. in fact, it will probably never be deleted.

Thirdly, this has been an ongoing discussion amongst the administration and it really shouldn't have any noticeable affect on the regular member.  The only changes are going to be within the management of the site, and these changes are being made in order to implement seperation of duties and checks/balances where there were none before.  In other words, we are attempting to safeguard the administration from acting in a unilateral fashion or in any way where one person makes all the decisions.  While the site may experience some downtime in the coming days, rest assured that the Shroomery is going no where.  This was 3D's choice, and he decided that rather than attempt to work with people he felt he could not trust, he would distance himself from the site.  It was his call and I can understand why he made it, even though it is not the decision I believe I would have made had I been in his shoes.

It's a sad thing to see such a dedicated member leave the community, but shit happens.  Life isn't always fair and people have to make choices for themselves.  I look forward to continuing my service to this community and seeing that it remains at the forefront of the mycological genre.  I hope that you will all be here with us and help with the good that we are trying to dispell to the masses.

In short, there is no need for everyone to start trippin' out.  Pay your respects and leave it at that - if you feel you have to leave as a result of this, then I feel you have been misguided but again.. you make your own choices.  Much love to my shroomerite brothers and sisters, here's to an ever-brighter future :heart:

Ok. As many of you know 3D and I do live together. What the other admin dont know is that there are times when I do look and read what is on 3D's screen when they all talk. 3D did all he could to try and reason with the other admin on this whole thing. But no one would listen to him. All they cared about was getting what they wanted. They just left him out in the cold not giving a rats ass in hell what happened to him.

Thor says that this thing has nothing to do with the reopening of OTD...if it has nothing to do with it then why did this whole thing start after 3D reopened OTD? That doesnt make since to me...

If Ythan cared about Shroomery he wouldnt had left so many times. He would had stuck by it and delt with shit. 3D was the ONLY person who has never ran when hard times fell upon shroomery. Every otehr admin left and left all the BS for 3D to deal with on his own. If you ask me that isnt someone i would want as a leader of a community such as this one.

The admins all said they wanted to make shroomery so that there was no one leader. Yet in a post that Thor did he said that he and Ythan would be to two owners of shroomery. So where does that leave the other admin? From what I understood every admin was going to have there part in shroomery as an owner...but from what I also understand there are more then just 2 admin here.

thats just my 2cents on this and that is what I have seen 1st hand.

If you were in fact watching 3D's screen throughout all of this, you would know that we offered him options which would have provided significant monetary compensation as well as a tentative position on the administrative panel had he agreed to put the hosting contract into Thor or Ythan's name. He would have been given a permenant spot on the panel had he proved that he could work with us and give concessions to the majority vote in the admin. This was a demand of ours as a result of his past actions in making decisions without consultation. OTD definitely had something to do with this, as Thor stated, it was the straw that broke the camel's back. This initiative was implemented in response to 3D's continued lack of regard for the other administrator's opinions. I didn't want to come out here and bring all this dirty laundry out - but since you are making accusations, I feel it necessary that the truth be known.

Additionally, you claim 3D as the only person who has never ran. Well granted I haven't been here as long as he has, but I have never left this community nor will I after all that it has given me. The hosting contracts were to go in Thor or Ythan's name only as a temporary measure until we could establish the Shroomery as a limited liability entity in which the administrative panel would all be given an equal share. It is arbitrary that their names would be the placeholders, the point was to offer 3D a deal which would have served to keep all the admins on board as well as implement the necessary changes in the administration to ensure that one person's opinion would never be held above another's. That's the truth, plain and simple. I love 3D, but he just didn't want to work with us and that is that.

This is another thing that I will never understand. Nobody was going to remove OTD. True, removing OTD was a poll option (to be complete and fair in the poll), but it was doing very poorly. Sadly, this is indicative of a pattern of behavior, which is not conducive to working in a group. Would you still be as concerned if he acted unilaterally, in this instance, to delete OTD? Are you really in favor of living under ONE benevolent dictator, so long as he hasn't banned you or destroyed what you love? If so, then what will happen to you, when he does something you don't like, because you will have NO RECOURSE -- much like a few banned members I can think of -- his opinion is final, and there won't be any other Admins to appeal to. You seem to be terribly misinformed about the nature of this situation and about the facts involved.

PPS: Calbha, if you truly want to be unregistered, then PM me, and I take care of it. I hate to see you suffer like this. This goes for anyone else as well. I hate to see people needlessly suffering.

I tried to work with him, and I have tried smooth this whole thing out. I don't think he has communicated effectively in this situation, and unfortunately, that is part of the larger problem. That being said, I still welcome him to reconsider, and will work with him and the others to smooth this over. However, The administration is now going to consist of several equal members with equal say. We are NOT going to have all of the power in one person's hands again. This site is too important to allow that to happen!

Geo, you know I did try and work things out, but there was no way I was going to give up everything I've worked for. Ythan and Thor could have very easily held things over other people's heads if they were the only ones listed on the hosting contract. Since Thor has control of the domains (which he aquired unlawfully), and Ythan recently registered the trademarks. They would have/and are using both of those things to get their way.

This isnt a country, this isnt a government system, this is a fucking website, 3d had rights to the server, he gave you guys some power, and you took the rest of it.

I once had a website, I to gave somepeople who I trusted to much power, and the next thing I knew there were "admins" arguing on the main page, in the form of "news stories" in anycase, that became the end of my website. (That was somewhat large back in its short lived prime)

I'm not saying that Ythan, and the rest of you should have no power, but that you guys (with the possible exseption of Ythan) shouldnt expect to have equal power to the server owner.

Then you should have spoken up! Communication -- there's no reason you can post more, when you feel strongly about an issue. Instead of waiting untill it's too late and just acting unilaterally.

Additionally, even if you were against the suspension, and had stated as such, if you were out-voted by the other Admins, then it doesn't matter. This site is run by a small group of Admins. That way, we don't live under tyranny.

Again, this is nothing personal, and I have no problems with working with you, but things have to change structurally for the best interests of this community. 3D - you agreed to the motivations behind the temporary suspension of OTD by making only *one* post in the Admin forum in regards to the proposed project, in which you quoted the goals I had written and while you stated there would always be a need for OTD on any website, you never explicitly or implicitly stated that we shouldn't termporarily close the forum. It was only until a week later that you started to voice concern about any changes being made to the forum even if the membership at large voted to implement said changes.

So far as trying to work things out with Thor and Ythan - I know that you didn't want to put their name(s) as the sole contract holder because you felt you couldn't trust them, but if you were going to become an equal part of the administrative panel, you should have put faith in them to uphold their word and not take control of the site. Right now I'm putting that faith in them and have no concern that they will try to go over my head - we are a team and team members must trust each other.

Calbha - as far as the domain is concerned, all I know is that Thor was the domain holder way back when as well as today. Given a few weeks, there will not be specific names for any of these contacts as the Shroomery will operate as an independent entity managed by a board of directors.

The part I can't deal with is that people would access your personal information. That's just plain wrong. Especially the locking you out of the server and then downloading everything. That's no more improvement or lacking in "Tyranny" than any other action than I have seen.

I also wanted to mention that Thor is now a spore vendor (http://www.mycogrow.com). Do you guys really want someone who is a competing vendor with the advertisers here having a say in how the site is run? That was one of the first rules we made, not to let vendors have any control over things where they could use their power to further themselves.

To clarify, Thor is not a paying vendor to this community, he has no advertising rights here, nor will he ever (as long as he is even remotely connected to the administration).  With an equal say administrative panel, I find it hard to believe that an admin who doesn't even have the right to advertise here would be able to manipulate the site to his benefit.

My my my, those reptillians living in the core of the Earth managed to do the same thing here as they do in government, religion, and everywhere else. The thing about power addictions is that they can never be quenched.... *sighs*

This is a great place. Spirituality and Philsophy kicks total ass. I'm not one of the ones behind the curtain, creating all the magic, but from the viewpoint of a person who comes here and soaks in the experience that this place provides, everything was fine as it was before. If we had a dictator, well, he wasn't killing people or projecting negativity on anyone. A service was provided and that service kicked fucking ass.

I think whatever is done should be done for the best of the Shroomery. Like I said, I don't know what goes on. I'd just like to ask that everyone who is involved and has power or is trying to obtain some keep a clear perspective that makes sure what needs to be done for the good of everyone is done.

We have people here that are keeping the knowledge of mycology being constantly advanced, we have people here that are exchanging ideas as to what this life really is, discussing collections of thoughts that could end up changing the world someday, we have artists and musicians who use this place to get quality feedback from other creative individuals, and we have people just looking for a place to hang out and shoot the shit with other people with a shared interest.

This place is a nexus. Ideas are developed, shared, and passed on here. We all share common ground here, even beyond the gift of life that everyone shares.

3DShroom, I can't say that I really know you, but thank you for doing the work that I couldn't do to offer a place such as this. I owe a lot to you, man. If you have to leave, man, I guess that is up to you. Tusen takk, man, and good luck with whatever you decide to pursue.  :thumbup:

it really is sad to see you go - though you were given the chance to be apart of the administration...it was your decision and i could understand why you wouldn't want to be with people who have "backstabbed" you. but as i said on IRC, this is a step ahead for everyone...you can start a new site and hopefully there won't be any "lack of communication" problems with the new administration.

but my sentaments are the same. i have been here 2 years now, and only know ythan from a few posts ABOUT him, and a few he made before the new templates was installed.. and most other admins have fell out along the way.
3D was the only consistant i have seen since i have been here. He IS the shroomery, the other admins past or present may not like to admit it, but that is the facts.

You know, when i was considering using ubbthread at the emporium, i spent a lot of time in their own forums, reading about upgrades, mods, etc. and what did i find? 3D was there, and there was no hiding his love and devotion about the shroomery

i guess it shows, because he has never left us.

it saddens me the shroomery is losing him, i think this is the gravest error they have made.

i also feel that with the devotion and love he has for the mushroom community, that his site will flourish, and one day be a leading force in the mycological communties.

Ok people it seems to me that 3D got the first word in, and no one ever actually listened to the things admins have been saying. I think mistakes have been made on both sides, especially by the admins (and ESPECIALLY if that shit about messing with 3D's admin rights and stealing his accoutns and shit), but 3D has obviously made some mistakes as well, and it is his decision to leave. Don't start yelling at me that I'm "pro-admin" but I did see some valid points that they raised, points that were completely ignored.

On the other side, the admins seem to be taking the holy holy we are saints stance....admins you can't expect us to believe you did everything right? I mean seriously, fucking apologize for something! Admit some fault in this! All you can say is "I'm sorry 3D decided to leave" well how about "I'm really sorry I treated 3D the way I did, or talked to him the way I did, I'm sorry I treated him WITHOUT RESPECT". That's what it comes down to, regardless of who was right or wrong, if what 3D, his room mate, some others have said about the way you treated him, then I think you guys could genuinely apologize...but I think you are afraid of admitting anything because you think we'll usurp you or there will be a great coup of the shroomery or something...or maybe 3D will change his mind and you really actually don't want that? I don't know.

Remember I am not only bagging on you guys, 3D may very well have done things wrong, acted irradically, who knows, I haven't been here as long as most of you but I've seen him as a great guy and I see a lot of people who respect him, but he isn't infallable. My overall point though is for him to leave in the way he did, I'm positive that the admins who are left must have treated him with disrespect, for all he has done here. I'm new here, yes, but from reading posts from various people it seems that 3D is more responsible than any of the other admins for what a great place the shroomery is, the shroomery that I really really like (I spend hours here each day just reading posts, this really is the best online community I've seen, a community that I'm trying to become a part of), then I think he deserves more respect than what he was given.

But seriously everyone needs to calm the fuck down. And we really need to hear resolution about admins logging into 3D's account's without his knowledge or consent. That is something that needs to be clarified, if you didn't do anything explain yourself so the stigma won't remain over your heads and if you did do something then fucking admit it and apologize.

I think that if 3d needs money to keep the site and pay for things
than those of us that support him should send him some money

well heres my sense on the whole ordeal...the shroomery is slow as hell now, unbearably slow...waiting close to a minute for a page to even open...not just load and im on a T3. sql errors up the ass not to mention all the other issues with the site as of recently. so your what is your commitee gonna do now? it seemed like 3d was doing fine, and now that theres a commitee things are falling apart. this change is a bad idea...3D if you open a new forum, ill be first in line to sign up...id never leave the shroomery, but you guys have to get your shit together before this site falls apart.
if its just a server thing, or money for that matter, did you guys ever consider asking for donations? im pretty sure everyone registered to this site would donate 10$ or so a year. and how many hundreds of users post?

3d, as far as things go with people 'stealing your accounts' and 'illegaly taking domain names'...theres things you can do when people break the law...

That really sucks what they have done to you 3D... this website has gone downhill since OTD was closed.  Hope it recovers, but the magic seems to be gone.

Looks to me like the rest of the admins wanted as much power as 3D, or they wanted to bring down his power to their level, so they stage a coup under the guise of forming a "democratic committee" knowing full well 3D wouldn't agree and leave or be pushed to the sidelines.  Problem is usually only crap comes out of committees that have no leaders.  Without a leader lame stuff will happen like OTD getting closed because they will "have no choice" because one guy brings the issue to the table and the majority votes for it.  Seen stuff like that happen too many times on the internet, where anonymity from the public makes it too tempting for the voters to pick selfish choices over the right thing.  Power corrupts!  :rolleyes:  It takes a strong leader like 3D to resist that corruption.

My advice is for everyone to just STEP BACK, take a deep breath, and think before you post. I've been around this place quite a while (member # 18) and I have noticed that everytime we have one of these Shit Storms its the same people pouring gas on the flames and complaining because the place is burning down, and then pointing fingers instead of being in the water-bucket line. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad. It doesn't have to be this way, folks.

Obviously some mistakes were made, but it doesn't do ANY damn good to start pointing fingers. I've never gotten involved in personal attacks and vendettas against this user or that forum because it all fits together and we always stumble through somehow. Is OTD the heart of the Shroomery? Hell no. Its an organ in the body that is the Shroomery;What body part it is I will leave up to your imagination. But it's necessary. Now if it starts spilling its contents everywhere and poisoning the body as a whole then it might need containing. Not changed.

As far as individuals go, it seems to me Papaver is doing just fine. I don't know what he does technically and really don't care. He does a lot of things that go unnoticed in terms of personal relationships. Every organization needs someone like him and I'm glad he's here. Ythan? Come on. He's the founding father of the Shroomery- none of us would be here posting if it wasn't for him. He's a class act and you won't ever see him taking part in attacks like what has gone on here- he'll kick back, gather his thoughts, and when the time is right say just what is needed and no more.

This is a good point. The only people affected by this deision are the administrators.

A body of five non-elected, self-appointed officials does not a democracy make, and it is silly to pretend that there are any noble intentions behind what has gone down here.

Ythan made a post not too long ago regarding community ownership. His point was that the community makes this place what it is and that they will only support this place as long as they feel that their voice is heard. It makes no difference whether the voice of the people are heard by one or five people, just as long as it is heard.

That being said, I had tried to work with 3d several times while I was a moderator here, and I definately understand the frustration of the other administrators. A title with no power is a ridiculous thing, and power is the knowledge that you can do something if you want to.

What effect this will have on the community will be interesting. It probably won't have much of one at all though, unfortunately, and I say that only because effects are interesting

This isn't a country. It is a website.

It isn't about noble intentions. The administrators have put a lot of their own time into this website as well. 3D would have gotten nowhere with the shroomery without the dedication of most of the current admins. It is fair that they wanted some power to make decisions, and unfair that 3D couldn't realize that it wasn't only about him and his website anymore.

That's my take, let's end this "democracy" crap. We are a member of an online community, yes, but it is still just a web server. I'm confident that the current administrators do care about keeping and making the shroomery a better place, we'll never know all the details of "what went down" so let's move on.
