What To Do With Contamineted Compost / Substrate Cakes?
    #3744281 - 02/07/05 04:58 AM (19 years, 12 days ago)

I am wondering what to do with a contaminated compost... throw it away, or keep it growing to see if the myc take control of it, and if so, would it be better not keep it?

I was discussing it with a friend here, I told him I prefer to cook the compost a week before the inoculation, so I can see if some contam occured.

He told me that it would be better inoculate as soon as possible, so if there were a contam the myc will have the same chance...

Thanks for any help... and excuse me for the Macarronic English.

It depends on the size and kind of contamination. Try scooping out the infected section with a sterile spoon or knife and pouring some salt in it.

"Cook" should mean pasteurize. You should follow the process (pasteurization) as it is described. I would use the compost asap, if you don't do it, other microorganism will start growing and will jeopardize any future mycelium growth.

Excuse me. I didn't  make myself clear.

I am talking about the substrate cakes, and not the compost for the casing or so.

Thanks.
