Capacity of 8 Qt pressure cooker?

I am planning on ordering a Presto PC/canner. There is an 8qt and 17 qt for approx same price. I would prefer the 8qt since i would be able to use it for more than just this hobby. But i would like for it to hold 10 x 1/2 pint jars. Does anyone the exact capacity? The presto literature says 5 x 1 pint. Mathematically, that would imply 10 x 1/2 pint jars, but perhaps the jar dimensions are such that you can only get 8 x 1/2 pints in there. Any info would be appreciated. This is a mail order decision so i can't just bring a jar to the store for testing.

I have an 8 qt pc and can only get 5 half pint jars in there. The reason that you can get 5 pints in there as well is because they are a bit taller, but not twice as tall as 2 half pints. If you try stacking two layers of half pint jars, I think you will find that the lid will not fit.

Thanks for the reply. You may be right, is your PC a Presto? I can't find any of that size in the stores to test (only 6 qt versions around). I am trying to ask Presto customer service but forget to call during working hours. I did try an experiment, there is a 8 QT pot in my kitchen, and interestingly that was able to fit 7 1/2 pint jars on the bottom and then i could lay 3 on their sides in the second teir. So that held 10 no problem.

no, my pc is a mirro.. but I imagine they're probably similar. The inside is roughly 10" inner diameter, and about 5" high. I hadn't thought of putting the second layer on it's side, but with the wide mouth/tapered half pint Ball jars I use, the jar is actually taller on it's side (about 4") than it is standing upright (about 2.75"). That's with the lid on. Also, one thing you may want to consider when testing with a regular pot is that pots generally have a convex lid which will allow you more room, whereas the lid on the pressure cooker must clamp down/lock tightly and you don't have that extra room on top. Good luck.

I've an 8 quart Mirro, I can fit twelve half-pints, that's eight on the bottom and four sideways "upstairs". It'll do seven one pint jars at a time.

Well, in any case you're still way better off going for the 17 qt if it's the same price as the 8. It will save you loads of time if you're innoculating more than a few jars at a time... I can't speak to the merits on whatever else you may be using it for. BTW... can you post the link where you found a 17 qt for the same price as the 8? I think I may want to upgrade. thx

What a discrepancy Puscle - 12 x 1/2 pint Product 5 x 1/2 pint Huh? I suspect that either Product's PC is really a 6QT and not an 8qt, or Puscle's is larger than an 8 qt. OR and maybe this is the key - maybe, Product is using wide mouth jars and Puscle is using just regular tapered jars. The experiment i did was with Ball regular tapered 1/2 pint jars. i suspect they are narrower than the wide mouth, hence i could fit seven in a circle on the bottom of pot. Mayb Puscle is experiencing the same efficiency.
