s. divinorum problems!!
    #3718273 - 02/02/05 08:57 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

a while back I received a salvia cutting from a person on this board..

she grew alot after I planted her and heres what her new sprout looked like:

my salvia sprout is still only around 3-4 inches tall. It had about 3 sets of leaves but they all got dark and fell off and its just a big stem with the smaller plant sprout attached. there was some blackening on the big stem so i cut it down to a smaller size..

the little sprout is just a stick now too but its still green and has only blackened on top where the leaves fell off..

i still water rarely and mist frequently..

a flourescent light is being used on it

any suggestions?

I'll take a picture when I get home so everyone can see what she looks like.

They are hard to keep alive. You can keep it under a clear dome to raise the humidity but it may be too late.

I think you can water them more, they like water so watering rarely sounds too little to me. also maybe keep a plastic bag over it for a while to maintain constant humidity. salvia also likes a little common plant fertilizer

From what you said. It sounds like you haven't been watering it enough.

"i still water rarely and mist frequently.."

did you water more or less after you posted this???
because to me, it looks like your soil was too damp/ compact. in the last pic the soil defiantly looks like your villain. i have seen this many times, and i know salvia likes it wet, but the black is most likely a rot caused by over-watering, or cold temps, what are your temps.??

don't get me wrong misting can be helpful for young cutting, however, if your soil is wet, and you are misting you might not have let the soil dry enough, thus not allowing any oxygen to get to your roots.
and commonly if your plant is only two inches tall the plant will get enough humidity from the evaporation off the soil, misting can be reduced, not eliminated.

and no don't move your cacti outside,

San Pedro is hardy at that temp, however, only if planted in the ground, so if it;s in a little pot on your porch, it will freeze, individually potted plants can't withstand as low as temps as plants planted in the ground.
i would think you wouldn't get any new growth from putting it out in such cold, and as the cactus would have to acclimated to it's new environment, it would be counterproductive. i would recommend to all my patients that they not put plants/ cacti outside until the nigh time temp have broken 50 degrees.
being in your warm house in a south or west window, would encourage more growth than putting it outside now.

a good thing to do would be to pull that little guy up, and see if your soil is too damp, see if you had any roots..... good way to learn what happened, so if it starts happening again you will know and you will be able to stop it.
hope this helps some one.

I'm having problems with my leaves falling off and drying up as well. She's still pretty healthy, but I'm worried about her turning into a stump. I've tried a humidity dome a few times, but it only seems to make things worse. The drying up stops, but then the leaves get limp and fall off. I think it might be a problem with not getting enough air. Does anybody know how to rig a humidity tent that doesn't suffocate the plants? I'm definitely not doing it right.

is the soil moist and those leaves are turning black? or is the soil dry and that is happening? more info would help to diagnose the problem, soil conditions, light, is that a rooted cutting....

and simply make a dome or an enclosure, out of clear plastic or the like, and put some holes in the plastic to give ventilation.

leaves falling off can be because of temp changes or drafts that exceed the plants comfort zone. or because of excessive over watering. if there aren't many healthy roots and it's too wet it can cause that kind of drop.

and humidity can be raised by putting a gravel tray with water under you plants.

peace good luck.

I water very frequently, and the plant isn't rotting that I can tell, just getting dry and crispy. Some of the brand new leaves have turned black. I have one of those pots with the drainage tray underneath, and my room is usually a nice 70 fahrenheit. The plant came in the mail in a pot, I assume it was a cutting but it was rooted in soil when it arrived. Not very much light, I keep the curtains closed most of the time. The soil is regular potting soil, pretty rich.

"Not very much light, I keep the curtains closed most of the time"
that's bad. more light will help.
do you have a heater or draft near the plant?? if not probably humidity. or lack there of.

I've got a few Salvias, and when I take a cutting and need to root it, I just stick the cutting in a transparent plastic bag - and close it. You can't have to much humidity! Put some clear plastic bag or container over your cutting and keep the light on it, you should see improvement in a week.
