Straw oven bag pasturization?

afoaf was gonna shred some straw up tonight and wanted to know how you all pasturize it. afoaf said that putting the straw with some water in it in an oven bag and pasturizing for a couple hours once the temp reaches 170 F would be better/cleaner than the pot on the burner. should afoaf just soak the straw in the oven bag while pasturizing and then poke some holes and let drain/cool before mixing w/ wbs? what should my buddy do? also, how long till wbs can be mixed w/o killing the myc?


also, afoaf purchased straw in a "mini-bale" w/ 24 ounces content for $5.15...is that an around average price?

I get full sized bales of wheat straw for $2.50. Then again I live in the country, so maybe I get good prices. Definitely let the straw cool for several hours (or overnight) before spawning, or you'll kill the mycelium. Check this thread out, alot of good points to consider when sterilizing straw in the oven:

thanks for the link diver, but i need to know specifically, should i just make sure the water in the oven bag is soaking? or should water be filled to half the height of the straw or up to the full height? i could poke some drainage holes afterwards but i need to how much water i should put in the oven bag w/ the straw.

Soaking the straw/dung mixture before pasturization and squeezing to correct moisture content is the easiest way to go.
I haven't run into much moisture loss with a properly sealed bag.

its only straw, that's why i ask about the moisture content because i don't know how much water straw soaks up and retains.

it's fairly difficult to oversaturate it.

Just put it in a tub of water with a brick on it overnight.
Then transfer to oven-safe bags. :thumbup:
