If you dry the mushrooms properly and keep them in a cool, dark, dry place (a sealed container), they SHOULD last quite a long time. You can't prevent the psilocybin/psilocin from breaking down at least partially, but you can slow it down. I remember reading once about a guy who ground his shrooms into powder and tightly packed the powder into sealed jars. According to him, four years later the powder was still mighty strong.

theres too many factors to determine which shrooms are "good" and which aren't ... depending on whether homegrown or picked, flush, etc etc...but the dosage calculator will show approximately the amount of psilocybin and psilocin in each kind of shroom
We're all MADD here...

IF your shrooms are dried properly they can last for more than 100 years. Analysis of a collection of liberty caps form England, placed in an herbarium in 1851 were analysed and found to be as potent as shrooms picked one year earlier inthe 1980s. Keep them away from heat and light. Problem is is that no one saves shrooms for long term, unless its a researcher who might only eat them every few years. Even growers run out all of the time so no one saves them past a few months. Fresh shrooms can gbe klept in the icebox in a paper bag on the door side for abnout 7 to ten days. Or you can maybe store them a little longer in a tupperware container int he vegetable drawer in your frefrigerator. Have a shroomy day and you can read about proper methods of drying and storage at my website mushroom field guide at: http://mjshroomer.yage.net/species.html The guide has over 1500 images of 55 species of psilocybian mushrooms. Have a shroomy day mj

Good comments from the other guys on preservation. As for those common names . . . they're of limited usefulness compared to the scientific names, for distinguishing different species. "Golden Tops" usually refers to Ps. cubensis. But there are a variety of names applied to cultivated strains of this species. "Liberty Caps" are Ps. semilanceata, a pastureland species of north temperate climates (NE & NW North America, much of Europe), much smaller than cubensis but considerably stronger by weight. The name is often (incorrectly) applied to Ps. pelliculosa, a similar looking but much weaker woodland species. "Wavy Caps" are Ps. cyanescens, a potent woodlover w/ similar geographic distribution to semilanceata. "Blue Ringers" are Ps. stuntzii & fimetaria, weak (but often plentiful) Pacific NW species of lawns & woodchips. "Blue Meanies" are Copelandia cyanescens, a tropical dung species with strong bluing reaction & high potency. Many other species do not have consistent common names, and are generally referred to by their scientific names. The "Identification" section of Mushroom John's website has the best collection of species photos & descriptions on the net. This is THE place to start learning.
