obtaining the right hardwood chips
    #368394 - 08/07/01 09:21 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I was at home depo, and they had "red colored hardwood chips" and "red hardwood chips". They were wet from rain, and it appeared that they had been died or painted red. I assume i shouldn't buy these. They also had cypress chips, and hardwood bark chips. Where can i find the right stuff. thus far i have had no luck.

Try cedar hamster bedding available at Wal-Mart in the pet dept. or @ a pet store. You can get big bags for pretty cheap.

actually, cedar really is not what you want, from what i understand. i had this conversation with workman and this is pretty much what he told me: do not use any wood with a lot of sap in it like pine because the mycelium cannot colonize it properly or at all. any hardwood chips are good. shavings or saw dust are good for spawn, but not for fruiting because they don't have enough mass for the mycellium to do anything with. you could try hickory chips (used for grills), oak, apple, anything that is considered a hardwood.

An unlikely (and expensive) place to get good hardwood chips is a beer/wine makers supply shop. Consider going to a plant nursery. Mail-order from a supply Co. like Fungi Perfecti, or others. Do a search on the web for 'wood chips'.
