Source for alder chips?
    #382430 - 08/30/01 09:49 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Does anyone know a good source for alder chips, preferably in the Portland OR area? Would like to cultivate azures or cyans. All landscape supply places only seem to cary cedar chips (which will not work).

Alternatively, any advise on a good substitute for alder chips?

Let your fingers do the walking, call around. When I lived there a few years ago, it was no problem to find Douglas Fir chips.

They should have them at Fred Meyer's, in the barbecue section. Alder chips are often smoked to bring out that "Indian style flavor." You can also order them online at the barbecuestore.com.

My friend has some Ps. Cyanaescens growing quite well in the adler chips from G.I. Joes, the 1/2 gallon bags designed for smokers. He simmered them for 1/2 hour to soak them, then cooled and innoculated with agar.

Hey man, I recently had to resort to chopping alder straight outta tha woods. And chipping the whole fukkin' tree with a hammer. Then I put all the chips into five gallon buckets, dumped in a bottle of peroxide, ajar of honey water, put the lid on shook them up an let 'em soak for a week. Then dug up the bed, laid out the chips , tarped tha shit... To my suprise shit's taking off extremely well...

Fungi Perfecti has it, Look in the store directory under media
for outdoor cultivation, the select hardwood chips and sawdust
are both alder.
