Bruising azurescens wood chips???
    #2833483 - 06/27/04 02:54 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I discovered a large hardwood chip path during late spring that I decided to inoculate with azurescens grain spawn even though it was showing some signs of being colonized by other fungi. I went to check the bed today and had a little dig around and a lot of the chips are colonized with white mycelium but bruise a blackish colour when scraped.

Does this sound normal? I?ve grown subaeruginosa outdoors in trays before but didn?t notice any bruising on the wood chips.

Cheers

I personally never noticed any bruising when I was working with azure mycelium. I definately think it is possible though. How hydrated is the bed?

Hi Joshua

The bed is very hydrated as its been raining quite a lot over here in England. The culture I have also blues strongly on agar when cut with a scalpel.

I have noticed briuising more readily with cyan cultures but not as much with azurescens. I also notice more heavy bruing on cultures that are well hydrated.

I'd be happy just knowing that bruising is occuring. It is a sign of the right mycelium and of a live culture.

Perhaps the fact that the culture is mixed with a wild fungus has something to do with it.

I've seen bruising on cultures, especially dried out cultures but never in wild beds.
I would assume it's possible, I try to disturb beds as little as possible and, so, don't really look out for it.
Peace
Edit: Oh yeah, the wild beds are mostly cyans, the cultures are various woodlovers.
