My predicament with "THE 10 Commandments"
    #3684455 -

I was hoping somebody can clear this up for me. I dont see anywhere in the bible where the 10 commandments are ranked in the respect of importance. I can draw this out into a long thread but let me just ask the question short and simple. Though shall now covet (desire or want something) cannot possibly be put in the same catergory as thall shall not kill. How can anybody even possibly put dis-obeying your parents aside murder????

As I have explained in a previous thread, these are not like laws in a lawbook. There are guidelines to a spiritual life. Believing that acquiring goods or sex or the death of another will fulfill some inner need or make you happier are all false beliefs. Honoring your father and mother means to give gratitude for your life and for their sacrifices so that you may be here.

Think of them in the way the Buddhists view the five-fold path.

I disagree. Material possesions and sex, as well as the digital death of others, all make me happy.

depends on what it is. An album might only keep me happy for an hour but a dirtbike could keep me happy all day.
Anyway, there is no such thing as a "true" happiness. The happiness one gets from doing a line of blow off some hooker's ass before nailing her is every bit as 'real' as the happiness obtained from giving a sandwhich to some hobo.
I know which one the church wants, but I also know which one would be more gratifying :P

No. Occasionally enjoying some virtual death matches does not a game nerd make.

I believe that God views all rebellion against him in the same manner. The greatest sin is disobeying him.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

Which is why, when God commands me to kill someone, I dare not refuse!

the tricky part is sifting through all the voices in your head to decide which one belongs to God

Feel free to be sarcastic. I understand the tendency entirely, but I can not explain to anyone what it is like to have communion with the one and only God. I can't explain it no matter how much I wish I could.

I try to go with the one with the most basso profundo voice like in the movies (or the one that tells me the most wacky, fun thing to do).

How do YOU decide?

How is my statement sarcastic when God in the Bible commanded Abraham to kill his only son?

I can't tell just by listening... I have to close my eyes and picture it. God is the cutest one.

My point is that it is not exactly common place. Also please note that God told Abraham to stop and not kill his son. It was merely a test (although a cruel one from a human standpoint).

the 10 commandments have some value - but not much.. Jesus abolished the old code, make sacrifice unnecessary. Commune with god back then was way different than now- or at least the times were different..
I think all of the Commandments should be followed- but to what degree is up for debate- Envy is wrong, but only if you let it boil and not do anything about it.. Why not strive and get these things yourself( not by stealing though ::) )

I assume you mean God telling people to kill other people. my answer is, you claim to have communion with the one and only God. so do some other people, some of whom claim that God tells them to kill prostitutes or whoever. are you telling me they are wrong and you are right?
