Shiitake/Portabella Q
    #3645508 -

Hi all, Well i'm new to this forum, I've been growing psychoactive for awhile and now i think i'm ready to try some woodlovers...I'd like to start growing some shiitake and maybe even some button mushrooms. 1st off, does anybody have any good links to shiitake grow logs or teks or something of the sort? My spores are free, but that doesn't mean that i wanna waste em , I'm ready to read but i can't find anything, so far, all attempts have been bogus
Well my other Q is.....i've heard that button mushrooms are really just early picked portabello mushrooms....is that true? And what are they're scientific names (genus?family?)....Well any links or any info on these mushrooms would greatly be appreciated, sry to sound like a dick and post, but i have yet to find something useful using the search...well, thankx

For shiitake, I found an article on this site (from the sticky thread in this forum): http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23601

Cultivation of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms : http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23599

Not sure if those are exactly what you need (you may have seen them already) but I have seen other docs on the subject from some google searches.

Here is some good info on Agaricus bisporus: http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/apr2001.html
Portabella and the button mushroom are actually the same species, usually button mushrooms are picked before the veil breaks yet portabella are larger, more mature specimens.

i am growing ports right now. Easy, and i use rye for a substrate. Shiit-takes would go best on a bran saw dust block. Faster colonization and fruiting a few month turn around as oppesed to logs which take a year or so to colonize but do produce more.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I had thought white buttons and ports were different species (bisporus = white, brunnescens = ports)--perhaps I'm just nuts.......btw, Ignostic, who are the girls in your avatar?

Agaricus brunnescens is a synonym/former name of Agaricus bisporus.
