They're pretty hard to grow, as they need a biologically active casing layer! All agaricus do, correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

Do a search on this forum; plenty of information is already posted.

Good luck!

I saw some fruiting on grain mixed with peat moss. The hard part is making your own compost. When done properly contains mostly actinomyces, which the mycellium of the portabella then eats.

Keep growing.

I heard that mushrooms at the grocery store cannot be cloned because they are genetically made not to be able to be cloned. anyone have any facts about this?

They're not "genetically modfied", per se. However, strains are often selected that won't go back to vegatative state easily once they've fruited. This is done with the highly skilled practice of "trial and error" ;-)

One issue with store bought is making sure you get a clean sample. Central, inner pieces of stalk work well.

i'll add that many of the strains available at the grocery store are sterile in the sense that they will not sporulate. this prevents non-clone reproduction as well as possible allergic reactions.

I was able to take a stem from a very fresh Portabella in the grocery store( it had some fluffy white at the base) and placed it in a container with wet cardboard. It started colonizing the cardboard with no problem. I left it growing for a few weeks, but it was during the winter and I was not prepared to go any further with it. But it is possible to get started like that.

I've got a good oyster clone from the supermarket and seen shitake and buttons done too.
