Portabella Kit
    #11748470 -

So to keep myself occupied while I'm waiting for my brf jars to colonize I bought this kit last week. At $40 probably too expensive for what I is but I was curious, bored, and it seemed a way to get to practice and learn a bit with some substrate that was already prepared and ready to fruit. I figured I could try taking some prints, cloning, making lc, syringes etc. so I wasn't green with all that when my jars were done.

I looked to me like the substrate wasn't fully colonized yet, so I closed the box and waited a week. I opened it today, and it looks the same. Well, maybe a bit more metabolite juice, but nearly the same.

I expect that it should be solid white when fully colonized, but maybe I'm wrong and it is ready now?

Also, can I spawn some of this to wbs jars and then to just coir? Will I or should I isolate on agar first? I do have a source for straw and manure but want to keep it simple as possible for my earlier work. Will basically and sub that will work well with cubes work with these?

Portabellas aren't really much like cubes. It's the same species as the white button mushrooms, Agaricus brunnescens, so that may help you find more info.

You should be able to get a bit of that myc out and culture it. That would be simplest if you used agar, but it's possible w/ WBS or rye. (I wouldn't try it to LC.)

Great idea BTW. You're right that it's a bit overpriced, but it's cool that it's all in there and ready to go.

Am I correct that the substrate should be completely white when fully colonized, or is it colonized in the picture in my first post?

It says it will be brown if freshly inoculated, frosty white or moldy if mature.

To me, it looks brown, with a slight frost. It almost looks like an opaque dew mist that is covering it. But it is still clearly brown underneath. All I can compare it with is the pictures of bulk subs on this site which look much more white.

FWIW, the box says do not start until Dec 10th.

I'd call that frosty white or moldy. You could case it. Or wait another week, if you like. :justdontknow:

I got one of those for xmas this year, and your looks way more colonized than the one I got. I cased the thing anyway just to get it done. My sister in law had it in her garage for a month before she gave it to me. It reached low single digits there and I think she kept it in her garage. I cased last monday and the directions say to wait seven days before checking it. I am supposed to look for grey mold then lift the sides of the bog and cover with a clear plastic bag and wait for pins. Misting everyother day or so...I will post pics when I open it.
