The mushrooms are pushing through it. There is no overlay. Just how Paul likes it. #2 the question of growing 2 different cubes on one cake has been asked many times here and people say that one of the 2 strains will take over and fruit. Well this kit is one big lump of compost, one side inoculated with button and the other with ports. As you can see they are both fruiting on their seperate sides. Cakes will doo the same.
God damn people did you read the title of the thread and the post ? he is say that if you put subs in a tray thy will not fight to the death and 1 win but rather will grow to no mans land a fruit on there side

what the hell does that have to do with any thing? if you are say that button and ports are the same species, and he said growning 2 cub subs witch are the same species in the same tray what are you trying to introduce that he has not?

Oh yea, i knew that pris
Sorry, i should have clarified a bit...I mean why would you want to use Peat alone...Verm. gets dense(like you said and ive seen) + its hard to tell when it's saturated...W/ coco coir and verm. i can tell when it gets saturated b/c the coir gets darker....
Tahoe said that he wanted to see someone do striaght Peat...I was wondering why he wanted to see someone do that...I don't know much about peat b/c that it will help the verm. be less dense...Just saying that i can't see why you'd use it alone..Anyone got input for that?

i want to see it becasue the pics in TMC are straight peat with a buffer. i have never seen pics of casing that are as prolific as the pics in the book. My ports grow like that. I wonder if the casing has something to do with it. I know that straight verm casing contam like crazy and that my straight peat casings never contam. So what about straight peat on cubes? What about non sterile peat? I dont cook the peat in my ports. I know ports require a non sterile casing and cubes it doesnt matter but i bet it helps if you dont cook it first

i think straight peat would be less likely to overlay, well i know it would be less likely. My ports never overlay. Mushrooms push up through the casing.

Hey Dem, SHUT THE FUCK UP, How's that? They're all different post
You're on ignore....damn
Hmm..Damn i've never really seen peat, but i've seen it contam before...My striaght verm's never contamed..Maybe b/c i did something differently tho, i always sterilyze it..
But i might try some striaght peat on a casing to see how it goes, probably use eggshell as a buffer, unless someone can vouce for lime? Not sure which would be better, anyways, i'll sterilyze one and not the other and see how it goes...Probably do that sometime w/i this month, or get a foaf to...

Yea, that's what ive seen lots of peeps do with cubes...Well not exactly like that...Once the sub. colonizes just below the surface, they stick it in the fc and it works out pretty well from what ive seen

I don't see what the big fuss is. It seems like you two are saying the same thing.
Yes, so ports and buttons are the same species. ANd you both would agree that they are different varities of bisporus.
The thing i don't really grasp is why you are arguing over whether or not buttons mature into portabellos. From my logic, they would not. A port would mature as a port and a button as a button. A maturing button doesn't change its variety...
Sorry if this was already addressed in this thread, I got a little tired of the bickering and skipped to the end.
And Scatman: i really respect your presence on these bulletin boards. Cheers

Agar be LIT...... No offense there Tahoe....
..BUT.......I'm with P-1 on this one.
Buttons, Crimeia & Ports are same strain, just bred for differing charicteristics.
A dog is a dog, some breeds were bred for their differing charicteristics. Like an apple is an apple, but bred for differing size, shape, color.......grapes are grapes.......but differ.........blah.. blah.
Way back when, some grower got a few white Ports in a flush, seperated them OUT & WHITE BUTTONS WERE DERIVED FROM THEM.

agar, i agree. P1 said that the white one would turn brown and become ports with age. I said they were different in that aspect. I compared them to the many varieties of cubes and i also made the comparison with different races of people.

I've been trying to find info on growing ports recently, but haven't bee able to find much on this site..
Could any of you point me in the right direction?
Does cased grain or non-composted horse shit work ok for fruiting substrate?
