Perlite Tek? Am I right or wrong?

Ok, this is what i've picked up on the perlite tek and how it works. Please tell me if i'm wrong or if there is anything else i should do.
I fill up my tank with 2 inches or perlite and add 3/4 water. When my cakes are fully colonized I put the cakes in the tank and put the lid on. Every day or so open the tank and fan the air to keep the air flow going.
Couple of questions:
Should I put some mesh on the bottom to keep the perlite from touching the cakeS?
Is there a better way then fanning?
Is there a certain temp I should keep the terrarium at?

Hey Mon,
Good choice using the perlite. i would recomend not putting the cake on the perlite to keep the contams down. use eggcrate cut to fit in the bottom or the wire mesh. this also helps with humidity.
If you fan them you will need to it at least twice a day for air exchange. if you don't want to fan you can use a fish tank air pump that is enclosed in a filtered boxs.
use a sold color box and cut a hole for some plexy glass. this will put the light over the cakes and tell them to grow up and tall.
hope this you ya mon. keep jammin

Ok, for the newbies, here's how to prepare your perilite.
I. put your perilite in a T-Shirt or a cloth(prefferably cotton) sack.
II. follow the steps below
1. Get your perilite (duhh )
2. pasturize it (if you feel the need to)
3. if you don't feel like pasturizing then just soak the perilite in water
4.squeeze your perilite till there are drops comming out of it
Remember. ANY water just LAYING around is asking for contaminants. So don't put 3 inches of perilite and 2 inches of water. The perilite needs to be SOAKED and DRAINED . You are looking for MOIST perilite not SATURATED perilite.

T., I don't think mesh is the way to go. You don't want your cakes soaking up all that water. Aluminum foil should work just fine.
And you want to fan at least twice a day.

Who was it that originally came up with the pantyhose perlite idea?

Ted: "Hey kids, who does your mom look like in the morning?"
Kids... in unison: "James Brown!"
Darlene, "All right, thats enough... It's poison spaghetti for dinner tonight."
