making a usable glovebox

I have never made a glove box before. I have spent a good part of today doing research on the subject and I wanted to run a few things by you guys. You might rember one of my post of a glovebox/grow chamber in one. Well I priced out materials and it would put me around 200 bux for the size I wanted so I decided to pass that one off. I would however like to make a glove box.

I have an idea for an ait filter already. It is going to be positive pressure. I would like to make it out of cheap materials. A rubermaid container might work. I thought about removing the lid and glueing on a piece of plexi glass for the ultimate clearity.

My biggest issue is the door and getting things in and out of the container. One user noted on my previous thread about using a sliding door instead of swing to get less air exchange. I would like to use this but I am not sure how to make one and still give it a good seal. Plus if I do remove the lid for a sheet of plexiglass how hard is it going to be to make a door? Would it be better to just keep the lid?

The other issue is that I would like to have two chambers. So that I can have an ait lock and hopefully cut down on contams moving in with items. But I am not sure what to make this box out of, and how to make it big enough to hold anything, as well is the issue is it going to help at all since it will do about 12 jars at once. So....do I have two doors. One big one for putting all the stuff in the start, and a small one incase I need to put something in I forgot about? Does an air lock even matter?

Anyone who has any insight in these questions would be awsome. If you have made a glove box before and had a design that works let me know what you did. Any info would be nice. Thank you all

ooh just make sure the room you are gonna inoculate in is sterile and moving things in and out of the gb is not a problem. i dont see the need for a super technical gb unless you wanna do mass growing.

i suggest that you get a regular rubbermaid and cut out the lid in a retangular fashion and then just tape down a piece of scrap plexi glass from your local hardware store ( a lot cheaper ). Use cow examination gloves , they are used for examing cows for pregnacy testing as the gloves , they do not last for years , but are like a dime a glove and are shoulder length . One last thing is , it is better if the box is clear , but that type of plastic is brittle so you have to be a bit more careful cutting out the holes , use a hot hair dryer or take your time and you will be fine . rubbermaids seal well enough and keep a can or lysol or oust inside and spray down the insides once loaded , the guy that I saw do that used to spray the insides when he loaded also , then respray once the lid was on . Then in about an hour he could come back and work the materials . One other thing that might be useful for you is to use a bic sure start or another brand as it keeps the flames away from your gloves . Another hint , if you get inpatient and happen to crack a clear box while trying to cut it , they do glue up well with duct tape. I am sure you will love your own home grown oyster mushrooms .

Hey Jent,
Take your time when it comes time to building these things. No sense in rushing it. Can't help ya with a sliding door, as I don't think your really gonna need it, unless you plan on using some sort of air filtration. I was going to use some blowers that I have laying around for my GB, but in the end I figured there's not much of a point for incubating some jars, and taking a few prints now and again. I believe as long as your smart and careful about your actions you'll be fine. I gave up cultivating afew years ago due to some other related problems that I had (I'm back now :smile:. However during the 2+ years that I was cultivating, I have lost one casing of about 60 or so....that's it...I shit you not! Never lost a jar either (knock on wood). The point is....I've never owned a GB till now. I was always careful in my actions, and used the oven for everything! Now maybe part of this has been luck?
Another tip...take a look at your surroundings where you'll be growing also, like your house, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, ect. Be a neat, organized, and clean person. Not trying to tote my own horn, but I get ?'s all the time on how we are able to keep the house so clean. Personally I think the majority of people in this world are slobs....lol. But that's besides the point. Just my opinion that this also helps.
There's no sense in building one for your shrooms, that is unless you plan on having some sort of air filtration in there also? your gonna have to get in and move things around, put new things in, ect. Not to mention your gonna need to have a fairly high humidity level whether it be fore casings or cakes. Something is always going to be threatening to contaminate is the best I can really tell you. Just play it smart.
Hold on alittle longer, maybe some of the pro's will jump on and help ya out, or tell ya to dismiss what I've just told you. in any case good luck!
