poppy question
    #358052 - 07/20/01 10:17 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

hi ppl im down here wanting to get some O, but i think there's a problem. the poppy seeds i find here are said to be papaver rhoeas, instead of somniferum. reading at my mom's gardening books, ive fund that this is the cultivated version of the flandres fields poppies, red with black center, white, pink, orange, blablabla, etc...
what is this flandres field shit? would this poppy work for O?

lol, i think i read at poppies.org that they are starting to use seeds specifically bread to produce low levels of alkaloids/morphine, so should i just get a better brand or just stick with the MCormicks?, cause i think someone (@poppies) gave a link to a site w\ persian whites for 1.75 a g.

i hear there may be a diference with the old and new mccormicks.....I'm working with the older ones that are from the Netherlands and according to people at poppies.org they are the Tazmanian strain. I also tried Morton and Bassett German blue from the spice isle and had a zero% germination rate. good luck:)

If you go to an Indian market (or any grocer with specialty isles) you can find large bags of white poppy seeds for around $2.00 for 3.5 oz.

These shoud be the Persian whites!

I got several seeds to grow from a store bought brand. However, I accidentally killed them at the seedling stage and never started over. I cannot remember the brand, but they came in a glass jar.

The Flanders poppy is the national symbol of ANZAC Day in my country. It is in remembrance of when a whole ass-load of Australians and New Zealanders were killed at Galipoli. The shells from the artillery fire bought old poppy seeds to the surface, where they germinated and grew. Papaver rhoes is inactive, as far as I know.

P. rhoea will not give opium. Why bother to buy shitty seeds from a supermarket when you can get much much better ones from ethnobotanical retailers?

iudexk,

You keep posting this link to MagickHerbs.co.uk. Is this your site? Perhaps it would be better to wait until there is actually something on the site before posting the link so much.

I'm looking forward to the launch though, gnostic garden could do with some more UK competition now that Abbey Ethnos have closed.

Take care

Phil
