I know it isn't the right kind but I heard that it still affects you somehow. Can someone clue me in on this?

Pretty much worthless from what I hear. No active alkaloid content.

Supposed to produce a mild sedative/anxiolytic effect...

Pharmacology
California Poppy is related to the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), but does not contain opiate alkaloids. The alkaloids present are more closely related to those of the Argemone genus and include magnoflorin, canadinemethohydroxide, norargemonine and bisnorargemonine. Total alkaloid content is about 1% of dry weight.

How can I release this sedative effect? Can I smoke it? If so what part do I smoke?

From what I gather, it's usually smoked but I would guess a concentrated tea might produce stronger effects. Don't know what part of the plant contains the most alkaloids -- according to the site I quoted above, the whole plant is harvested when in flower and dried. The -argemonine alkaloids *might* be in the leaves, cause that's where argemonine itself is found in Chicalote (Argemone mexicana).

If you decide to try it, I'd be curious to hear how it turns out.

Rather organise some papaver somniforum.
I grow big plantations of poppies, milk the bulbs and make the sticky brown shit.
Smoke it, sit back and smile.

Look for Iceland poppies, other names are escaping me now.
Basically look for the poppy without hair on the stem and bulb.

"Iceland poppy" refers to Papaver nudicaule. Never heard it applied to P. som before.
