Put's things into perspective doesn't it. This giant ball of rock is in constant flux and by association so are we. Add that picture to the vastness of the universe and we quickly see how very fragile things are.
Nice to see people immediately root in compassion. Saw that after 9/11 also. In times of devastation people center in the heart. It seems that people(some)instinctively ground in love as if they were guided from some pre-birth memory of whats real. It's to bad we need terrorist and tidal waves to awaken love on a global level.

It's funny how the majority of ppl here can't or feel they shouldn't donate even a dollar but then can spend hundreds on drugs. EDIT: Let me rephrase that, it's SAD not even funny at all.

anyone notice that the death totals are just about the same as hiroshima att his point?

One cannot compare disasters but if you look at hard figures you could coldly conclude this disaster is of greater magnitude since over five million people have become homeless according to the UN and that merely reflects the houses that completely collapsed. 125.000 confirmed dead... If every cross (+) represented a dead human being, then this + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + ...then this would merely represent one-thousandth of the people who are confirmed dead and if it represented the people who have lost their home, then their number would be forty-thousand times higher then this. It is so unreal.. We cannot comprehend the incredible scale of a catostrophy like this. I have updated the action page and among other things I have included a direct link to footage shot by someone close to the beach of Phuket, Thailand, when the second Tsunami wave rolled inland. It is very graphic but without visible death. I.. have to keep upping the death toll.. I kicked off the Shroomery campaign when there was an estimation that "there might be as much as 8.000 deaths". But it immediately was clear to me how this disaster had to be way, way more destructive then that. When this thread started the word was: "estimated 10.000 dead" And now.. 125.000 confirmed dead and it keeps rising. I've kicked off this emergency action and am still working it, donated my fireworks money, blackmailed my Christian fundamentalist friends with their own Bible until they coughed up the dough, I have released forwarding-emails to my network of friends to pass on the message and donate to the charities and am contemplating whipping up a rudimentary action website. I have sent a mass-email to a community of 1.000 people I am part of. But it's not enough, it never is, and I know I'm not at all the only one who went into overdrive for the people. Today I got an email from a girl I occasionally chat with. One line: my ex have some friends who died in Thailand... This is a global catastrophy, several Shroomerites have similar tragic tales to tell. My love goes to all of you who care to read this, who donate prayers and money and work for the people. Bless our Community, in the wake of the flood of death a flood of Love comes and the Shroomery, our online Community, is one of the places where this love comes straight from the heart. Let the Love guide our hearts, and let us, like Chinacat72 said, hold onto that love

Update: 135.000+ dead, 5.000.000+ homeless. The death toll seems to be tapering.. which is to say.. it was upped by 10.000 deaths over the last day instead a manyfold of that. About Gates' $ 3M.. He wouldn't even be interested to buy a yacht that cost a mere $ 3M. I think his exploitation of low wages of the third world nations now struck by this catastrophy easily are $ 3M a day. A large portion of the world's poor, at an income of about $1 a day, earn about $20.000 in their entire lifetime. At a personal capital of $54 billion I guess Bill Gates is more important then 2.750.000 human lives. If only somebody busted that piggybank wide open and blew it all on something silly like ending world hunger. Even if he didn't earn a dime anymore and spent a million dollars a day from now on he still has 44.000 million dollars he could find a better use for. I, for one, could not live with that greed. But enough with hogging billionaires, just look at what the Shroomery is doing. Look at the poll result of what we all have raised from our far more modest wages thus far. We're actually making it happen, we're well into the thousands of dollars at this point at five days after we kicked off our Shroomery fund-raising rally. Let's by all means go on but we can already be proud of our Community. Where many a drugsite says l0lz and does nothing we actually were right there on the third day of Christmas, committing ourselves to donations while most charity orgs were still blankly staring at the TV screen. An hour after kickoff we had already passed the $250 mark. A worldwide Internet Community? you betcha! Psychedelic people? Absolutely. Beautiful people? Oh yes At the turn of 2004 to 2005 we can be proud to be Shroomery people Happy New Year on behalf of the Shroomery Administration and the many thousands of disaster-stricken Asians unaware they can rebuild their community with Psychedelic funding from the druggies at Shroomery.org

If everyone in America donatated $1, we would have $350 MILLION dollars for these people. Think if every single person donated what they could. There could be a good use for McDonalds or some other corporate whore in this case too, if the media donated some time as well, every tv and radio station could advertise for 30 seconds maybe 5-10 times a day for people to take their donations to the nearest McDonalds and have volunteers there to accept them and compile them.
Much love and tears for all the people who lost love ones and loved places.

Remember the disaster area is vast and that a Muslim Imam does not call the shots to withold all aid. Priests will be priests, don't worry about that one. UPDATE: I added a page from CNN that lists dozens of online charities that can take online donations for the Tsunami Disaster. Several of these charities have got religious, dogmatic or political agendas so make sure you pick the charity that best suits the aid you feel is needed.

Oh Gods.. If that checks out the death toll might be as high as 180.000 as Indonesia was estimated as 80.000 Let us hope the Unicef spokesman was misinformed, but the Indonesian province of Atjeh was extremely close to the epicenter ("Ground Zero") from where these Tsunami's formed.. .

was it india's prime minister manmohan singh? india so far is the only country refusing international help due to the fact that they do have the resources to help their citizens affected themselves, though he is receiving international criticism for this.
in regards to aid, aid organisations and the sri lankan government are in disagreement with the tamil tigers who at this moment still control the northern area of sri lanka. the tamil tigers are asking for aid assistance but have told organisations/government that give the aid to them THEY will distribute the aid themselves. this is causing controversy because people believe that the tamil tigers will just stockpile the aid and use it on their own soldiers without really giving it to the ordinary people who need it. sticky situation
it's really difficult to see the before and after of the aceh province which was affected. i'm not surprised if indonesia has lost just 125,000 alone...when you see the amount of rubble in the after picture it's a miracle that people have actually lived through the earthquake/tsunami.
my personal new years celebration was nice but of course since people have been watching the news about this tsunami it was also pretty quiet. i met a couple at the party i was at for new years who just came back from the khao lak area of phuket which was heavily affected and where the most finnish casualties were in. the stories they told....geez, they're lucky to be alive

That's the price you pay for tropical beachfront property within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Anybody in the effected area should not be surprised that a Tsunami would have those consequences. I will donate no money for them to rebuild their villages on the beachfront, only for them to be wiped out by another "surprise" Tsunami. They should head to the highlands of their respective areas(which I am certain that they wont).
