what metals should be avoided? I know aluminum isnt very good.... what about brass? steel? copper? etc?
I reason I ask is I got some screens and I think they are brass, wanted to check on safety before I inhale fumes off em

If they are brass screens for a bowl, they are ok. If they are for something else they may have a coating of oil on them, even if you can't feel it. That is not good. I am a machinist and there are many tales of people making bowls and getting f'd up from the oil coating on all stock. In this case simply boiling them will render them safe. As far as the aluminum question, well crack smokers use cans all the time and they are ok, though, I would'nt do it myself, I try not to breathe the fumes ; ) Steel is not good either, but then again, don't crack users use steel wool too? Metal bowls are brass, even the silver ones are chrome plated brass

Steel is no good? I buy steel screens for my tobacco pipes at a local tobacco shop (as opposed to brass, those are the two choices). Why would they sell them if they are not safe? Should I switch to brass?
Now stainless steel, thats different. I know it can be bad for you same as aluminium.

Eh im a machinist too just finished 3rd year and i have a CNC programer ticket.
Brass is fine and recommended for bowls/pipes copper/aluminum/bronze are bad mild steel is alright but will give off some vapours if heated long enough like mentioned thouroughly clean every piece just to get rid of oil/other shit that is all over metals.
Nothing beats glass though

LOL. Hey Ralph, nice to meet you, we are about the same level. I am just about to finish a degree in machine tool technology. I do some mdi, nothing major yet. But I have mathed out a nice chess set (brass and alum.) I'm laughing because this seems to be a big concern for greenhorns: "Just because I'm a button pusher, does that make me a machinist." Well, the answer to that is, "If you, (the button pusher) are capable of tooling changes (toling is the term used for set-up), and going to a manual machine and making a tool that will aid in production, you've used your own inginuity and common sense to make something happen, you can call yourself a machinist." Um, that's what kind I am. Puke, do you have any cool pics? Let's turn this into a machine thread.

machine tool technology....very cool!
A machine thread it is then.
Do you feel that a varying helix angle on an end mill cuts down on chatter in corners?
